Last weekend was a hugely successful one for Fermanagh lad Conall Mahon who not only secured his first national title on Friday by winning the Irish Universities Triple Jump crown in Athlone but then went on the next day to break his PB on his way to victory at the Irish National Indoor League at the same venue.

Understandably, Mahon was delighted with his achievements and now has his sights set on challenging for the National Senior title in a fortnight’s time.

“I was very happy with how the weekend went, especially to have won the Irish Universities title as it is my first national title, and I was delighted with that,” commented Conall.

Mahon was representing NUI Galway at the event and produced a third round jump of 13.99m which was enough to take him to the title, the jump seeing him finish 38cm ahead of second placed Oisin Taylor (DCU).

There was little time for celebrating though with Conall back on the track the next day to represent his club Tir Conaill AC from Donegal Town.

And Mahon maintained his form as he leapt his way to a new personal best as he recorded 14.11m to claim the win.

“I would say that has been my best weekend in athletics so far. The National League would have been a higher level of competition but that spurred me on and I was delighted to jump an indoor PB,” he added.

Success does not come without hard work with Conall explaining: “At the minute I’m training six times a week between the track and the gym. I train in Galway but get my programme from my coach in Donegal Town and I got up to him then the odd time,” he said.

And the Fermanagh athlete will now go into the National Seniors in a confident frame of mind, hoping to go one better than last year’s third place.

“The National Seniors are in two weeks time and having jumped a PB that will give me confidence going into it. I came third last year in the seniors so an improvement on that would be great.” And looking ahead to the summer, Mahon is hoping for more success during the outdoor season.

“Hopefully I can go on and win the outdoor Varsities and the dream would be to win the outdoor senior title but I’ll have to see how I train.” Last weekend was a hugely successful one for Fermanagh lad Conall Mahon who not only secured his first national title on Friday by winning the Irish Universities Triple Jump crown in Athlone but then went on the next day to break his PB on his way to victory at the Irish National Indoor League at the same venue.
