Irvinestown’s Conall Mahon wrapped up a successful indoor season by claiming bronze in the Triple Jump at the GloHealth Irish Senior Indoor Championships at the Athlone International Arena last weekend.

Mahon went into the event high on confidence after securing gold in the Irish Universities Indoor Championships with a personal best of 14.11m, and he was not to disappoint as he clinched third spot.

“I was happy to have won another senior medal, that’s two in two years,” he said. “Overall I’ve had a good indoor season and I’m very happy with results. I thought maybe I could have jumped a personal best on Saturday but apart from that I can’t complain.” Conall was just 3cms short of his personal best at Athlone and is content that he is closing the gap on the top spots. Last year he also won bronze in the Senior Indoor Championships but he is much closer to the winner than he was last year and he feels he is beginning to show greater consistency.

“I never would have thought of winning it but I’m getting closer. Last year I was nearly 80cms behind and now I’m only 30cms so I’m getting there. Also, Saturday was the first time I have jumped over 14 metres twice in a competition which shows more consistency and that’s pleasing,” he commented.

It is now down to preparations for the outdoor season for the Fermanagh athlete and he has his eye on a number of targets including a first senior outdoor medal and a new outdoor personal best which currently stands at 14.18m.

“I want to continue training hard and if I stay fit and I’m not injured that will hopefully translate into competing well outdoors. It’s six weeks to the outdoor inter-varsities and the top two get to compete for the Irish University team so it is important enough with matches against Scotland and Wales.

“The main aim though is to get a senior outdoor medal. I haven’t won one of those yet so the target is to get one at the Irish Seniors and hopefully I can achieve a big personal best outdoors,” he added.
