Caroline Scott, Jean Carson and Catherine Scott are this year’s Irish Ladies triples champions after an impressive display in Richhill in Armagh over the weekend.

After qualifying through a tough section four weeks previously, the task was even tougher again as the Western trio came up against the defending champions skipped by Foyle’s Valerie Witherow.

With the final being played over 12 ends it was important to get a good start and that’s exactly what happened for the Western girls.

With all three playing important bowls they raced into a 9-3 lead after five ends. Witherow then struck back with a single in the next two ends to trail by 9 shots to 5 but the Wellington triple remained focused on the job at hand. They immediately secured another two shots on the eighth end before handing them back in the ninth, but it was to be the tenth end that gave them breathing space. With both Catherine and Jean playing great bowls, it was up to Caroline to add to their good work and that’s exactly what she did by picking up three shots to give them a 14-7 lead with just two ends remaining. Despite losing a single on the penultimate end they were able to keep things well mixed in the final end to ensure that the ladies’ triples title was brought back to Western zone for the first time.
