Border Counties Outdoor League; MATCH REPORTS:
Enniskillen 7 points (94shots) Clogher Valley 0 (30) shots
Convincing win for
Enniskillen
Played at Celtic Park this game really was one way traffic throughout with Enniskillen dominating right from the start.
Closest for Clogher Valley was Ernie Clarke"s rink of Noel Clarke, William McFarland and Billy Kirkpatrick who, up until the 12th end, gave Wilfie Crawford"s rink of Bertie Elliott, Tom McGrath and William Harpur a run for their money. The Clogher Valley rink got off to the perfect start winning the first three ends and going into an early five shot lead but after Wilfie"s rink chalked up a five in the fourth end to level the scores, the home rink then took control of the game and never trailed thereafter.
The killer punch for Ernie"s rink came in the 12th end when the Enniskillen rink collected a very important six shots to eventually win the game 19 shots to 14.
In the other three games it was all Enniskillen with Roly Livingstone"s rink of newcomer Andy Wray, Maurice Browne and Brian Reilly completely overpowering the opposition rink skipped by Harold Nelson and accompanied by Violet Kikpatrick, Kenny Givans, and Blaney Cartwright, and easily winning by a 20 shots to 5 margin. Meanwhile Ivor Armstrong"s Enniskillen rink was comfortably cruising to victory over Clogher Valley"s Billy Dunlop, Maurice Malone, Pat McElroy and Willie Rutledge. Ivor"s rink of Teresa McCourt, Alex Morrow and Dessie Brown were in unbeatable form and ran out very easy winners by 31 shots to 5.
It was the same story in the remaining game on rink four where for Enniskillen David Dickson skip, Janet Browne, Joe Reilly and Eugene dominated right from the early stages against John Burrell skip, Baedon Keys, N. McElroy and Frances Cartwright.
After collecting two fives and a four in the first half of this game, it was all over for John"s rink and he had to accept defeat by a 24 shots to 6 scoreline.
Clogher Valley 6 (68 shots) Omagh 1 (46shots)
Derby win for Clogher
After their disappointing result against Enniskillen, Clogher Valley needed a good result at home against Omagh to keep their efforts still alive in the league race, and that is exactly what they got.
Playing in a more determined fashion, the Clogher Valley team fully deserved the useful six points they collected in this game.
Best for the home side was Ernie Clarke"s rink of K Givens, Willie Coulter, and Billy Kirkpatrick who were clearly the superior team against Omagh"s Campbell Henderson. Going into an early lead, Ernie"s rink found themselves in a nine shot advantage before the visiting rink had graced the scoreboard.
The ninth end really sealed this result when the home rink brilliantly chalked up a superb six shots to go into a 20 shots to two lead before winning 24 shots to 8. In a closer affair on rink three, Billy Dunlop, Maurice Malone, Pat McElroy and Faith Malone, although going into an early lead, unfortunately for them dropped a five in the eighth to give the visiting rink skipped by J Craig a slight advantage.
From there on in it was a nip and tuck affair and at the end of the penultimate end the scores were level 12 shots each. In the final end the experienced Billy Dunlop sealed victory for Clogher Valley with a brilliant four shots to win 16 shots to 12. On rink one, Matt Livingstone accompanied by H Nelson, Rosmary McAnelley and M Small got off to an ideal start against Omagh"s Fred Shortt with five shots in the fourth end followed by a three in the seventh which secured their 17 shots to 13 win. The only point of the evening for Omagh came when their Stanley Elliott just edged victory over Clogher Valley"s John Burrell skip, Blaney Cartwright, B Keys and A Hurst. Unfortunately for Jon"s rink they dropped a four in the last end after leading by 11 shots to 9 to lose 13 shots to 11.
Sion Mills 6 points (55shots) Enniskillen 1 (48shots)
Deserved victory for Sion
Enniskillen travelled to Sion Mills hoping to break a series of away defeats but unfortunately this did not happen and they had to be content with coming home with a single point from a game which the home side thoroughly deserved.
P. Rice and his Sion Mills rink were drawn against Enniskillen"s Roly Livingstone, Maurice Browne, Brain Reilly and Andy Wray, and quickly proved they were going to be difficult opposition for the Enniskillen rink. Indeed, the Enniskillen men lost the first four ends to trail by six shots. Roly"s rink were under pressure from the start and after dropping two fours and two threes, there was no way they were ever going to win this one and were well beaten by 19 shots to 9.
On rink three, the home rink skipped by Trevor Wilson were having an end to end game with Enniskillen"s David Dickson skip, Janet Browne, Joe Reilly and Robert Wilson. After the home team chalked up a four in the 11th only a single shot divided the teams with David"s four having the slight advantage.
The remaining four ends turned out to be a disaster for the visiting rink with Sion Mills winning all four and the game by 14 shots to 9. For Enniskillen Ivor Armstrong"s rink of Dessie Brown, Alex Morrow and Teresa McCourt picked up the only point of the evening for the visitors with an overwhelming 18 shots to 9 win over R. Kilpatrick. Playing very consistently, Ivor"s four fully deserved their win after collecting a five and a four on the way.
In a very close encounter, Wilfie Crawford"s four of Raymond Gault, Jack Shaw and T McGrath came near to adding another point to the visitor"s score when they were just defeated by a single shot, 13 shots to 12 by Raymond Patton"s rink.
Enniskillen 5 points (50shots) Omagh 2 points (44)
Close encounter at Celtic Park
Although Enniskillen bagged five points in this game against Omagh, the score didn"t really reflect the closeness of the overall game.
Bertie Elliott, Jack Shaw, William Harpur and skip Wilfie Crawford just missed out on a point against Omagh"s Peter Fox"s rink by a single shot after coming back from a 10 shots to 3 deficit. Going into the last end, the Enniskillen rink needed three to win but unfortunately could only manage a two to go down 12 shots to 11.
On rink thre, Eric Hamilton and his four of Teresa McCourt, Alex Morrow and Dessie Brown were coasting in their game against Omagh"s B. Managh, comfortably leading by 12 shots to 4 with only three ends remaining. Unlucky for some was correct when in the 13th end the Enniskillen four dropped a five reducing their lead to three shots and giving the Omagh rink a chance to win the game in the remaining two ends. Fortunately the Enniskillen rink held out to edge victory by a single shot, 12 shots to 11.
David Dickson"s Enniskillen rink of Janet Brown, Joe Reilly and Eugene Nevin had a relatively easy win over Omagh"s Fred Shortt and after collecting a four in the sixth, it was all one way from then, eventually winning by 15 shots to 4.
Gerry Rasdale, Maurice Browne, Ivor Armstrong and skip Roly Livingstone for Enniskillen were drawn against the Omagh rink skipped by J.Craig and found out in the early stages of the game that they were going to have strong opposition in front of them. The Omagh rink took the lead after the fifth end and never lost that lead for the remainder of the game and ended up winning by 17 shots to 12.
BORDER COUNTIES CUP
First leg: Dungannon 44 shots Enniskillen 50 shots
In the first round of the new look cup competition, which is played on a home and away basis, Enniskillen travelled to Dungannon on Saturday and in ideal bowling conditions edged victory against a competent County Tyrone side.
The cup scoring system is slightly different than that of the league with only shots counting and the scores being carried forward to the next leg which will be played at Celtic Park next Saturday
On Saturday, the standard of bowling was at a very high standard with both teams serving up exceptional heads of bowls and Enniskillen were just about deserving their six shot advantage going into the next leg.
Raymond Gault, who was deputising in the skip position, had Maisie Morrow, Brian Reilly and Maurice Browne accompanying him and were drawn against possibly the strongest Dungannon rink on the day skipped by N Burrows. Raymond"s rink were in difficulties from the start and were trailing by nine shots after the first five ends had been played. Although they pulled back by reducing the deficit to only three shots after the ninth, they unfortunately dropped a four in the tenth and eventually went down 16 shots to 8. Teresa McCourt, Alex Morrow, Dessie Brown and skip Eric Hamilton continued their consistent form for Enniskillen by defeating their opposition rink skipped by Martin McKenna easily by a 18 shots to 9 scoreline.
David Dickson"s four of Robert Wilson, Andy Wray and Janet Browne held the advantage throughout their game against G McNally"s rink and deservedly held on, although dropping a three in the last end, to win 12 shots to 9. In the remaining game, Wilfie Crawford"s rink which included Peggy Wray playing her first competitive game on the outdoor surface, Jack Shaw and Tom McGrath had a very competitive game against the all-ladies rink skipped be Beth Shackles.
In an end to end game, Wilfie"s rink found themselves in the penultimate end with six shots lying against them and only one bowl remaining which the experienced Wilfie used to perfection to draw the shot. The Enniskillen rink ending on a 12 shots to 10 victory.
After the game, both teams were very well entertained by the Dungannon club and Enniskillen left for home after a creditable performance and a very enjoyable afternoon"s bowling.
