Tempo Parish Bowling Club held their annual pairs tournament last week and as usual attracted a very large entry of 110 pairs from various parts of the country. Play for the qualifying nights was competitive with the usual surprise results taking place throughout the four evenings play.
On finals evening, eight pairs returned, all eager to win the coveted Tempo title and the large numbers of spectators were not disappointed with the standard of play served up by them.
The quarter final results were as follows(skips names only):
R Kennedy, Antrim 6 G McNabb, Trory 5; T Morrison, Wellington 8 J Morris, St Michael's 3; G Ferguson, Devenish 11 J Breadon, Wellington 1; N Lafferty, Trory 6 T Cathcart, Wellington 7.
In the first of the semi-finals between Trevor Morrison and R Kennedy it was the Wellington pair who took the early advantage and had built up a single shot lead at the half way stage 3 shots to 2. In a nip and tuck affair in the following three ends, Trevor who was accompanied by Alan Browne, still held the single shot lead going into the last end and looked like as if they were going to book their final place. Unfortunately for them this was not to be the case as the visiting pair collected two shots in the last end to win by 5 shots to 4.
The remaining semi final was a more one-sided game with Tommy Cathcart and Norman Noble from Wellington winning six out of the seven ends played against Gordon Ferguson and William Harpur, Devenish Bowling club and progressed to the final comfortably.
After the standard of quality bowling in the previous rounds of the tournament by the two final pairs, the spectators expected and got a superb final and credit is due to both in serving up such a high standard under pressure.
Tommy and Norman had the ideal start, winning the first three ends and going into a useful four shot lead. The experienced Antrim pair showed they were far from being defeated and in a remarkable come back they also won the following three ends and went into a two shot advantage 6 shots to 4.
The seventh end proved to be the winning end for Wellington duo when they chalked up a superb three shots and then followed with a single to take a two shot lead going into the last end. In a very close finish the Antrim pair skipped by R Kennedy could only manage to collect a single shot, giving a well deserved victory to Tommy and Norman and the Tempo pairs title for 2010. by a single shot eight shots to seven.
After the final pairs had received their congratulations from all who were present, Matt Livingston secretary of Tempo Bowling club thanked all the competitors for once again supporting their tournament. Matt also had a special word of thanks to the club members and especially the ladies who provided the very welcome cuppa on each night of play. Derek Sommerville on behalf of the club then presented all finalists with their well earned prizes, which brought to an end a very successful tournament
