One of the longest running tournaments in the local bowling circuit took place recently. The annual Newtownbutler Pairs which was played over three evenings attracted a maximum of 24 pairs each night and was won by the husband and wife duo of Linda and Stanley Carleton.

On finals night, seven pairs who had qualified from the previous night's play returned to battle it out for the coveted Newtownbutler title. With one pair unable to return on the night A. Armstrong and Willie Rutledge, Tempo received a bye into the semi-final.

The result of the remaining quarter-finals was as follows, showing skips names only:

J Morris, St Michael's 6 S Carleton, Drum 8; I McElroy, Derryvullan 3 T Cathcart, Wellington 8; H Gawley, Wellington 9 P Cosgrove, Rosslea.

The semi-finals produced possibly two of the best games of the tournament. On mat number one, Derek Gilliland and Tommy Cathcart from Wellington club met the well known pair of Linda and Stanley Carleton from Drum bowling club county Monaghan, and what a nip and tuck affair this turned out to be.

The Wellington pair took the early advantage, winning four out of the first five ends and taking a six shots to two lead.

The game was completely turned around in the remaining four ends when Linda and Stanley took complete control, winning all four ends and edging a final place by a single shot, 7 shots to 6.

In the remaining semi-final between the Tempo pair of A. Armstrong and Willie Rutledge and the well-known pairing of Harry Gawley with Norman Noble from Wellington, the Tempo duo had edged into an early 3 shots to 1 lead at the end of the fourth end.

The fifth end turned out to be the deciding end when Norman and Harry chalked up a very important full house of four shots, and despite the Tempo bowlers collecting two single shots to square the game after the seventh end, Harry and Norman won the remaining two ends with single shots in each to advance to the final after a very entertaining game.

The final which promised to be a close affair between the Drum husband and wife pair and the Wellington duo, turned out to be an easy passage for the Carletons.

Harry and Norman, after playing some superb bowls throughout the tournament, just failed to perform in the final, with the Carletons on top of their game and ending very worthy winners of the 2011 Newtonbutler Pairs by 10 shots to 4.

At the conclusion of play Stanley Hall on behalf of the club thanked all the bowlers for supporting their tournament, the ladies who supplied the very welcome 'cuppa' with a special thanks to William Bell Tractors whose representative Gordon Bell presented all finalists with their prizes.

The Newtownbutler club really appreciate the ongoing sponsorship of William Bell Tractors from Fivemiletown who has been loyal supporter to the club over the years.
