Home success for Stubbs family
Christchurch Pairs winners Ronnie and Basil Stubbs with Jean Parkinson presenting the cup.
Father and son duo Basil and Ronnie Stubbs who are members of Christchurch bowling club have once again shown their consistency in the clubs annual pairs competition.
This year, as is usual, the Maguiresbridge club was very well supported with 96 pairs travelling long distances in stormy weather to support the popular event. After some very competitive games in the qualifying evenings, seven pairs returned on finals night, with one not able to attend.
In the quarter-final, S. Duffy and S. Coleman from Coalisland received a bye while Ronnie and Basil Stubbs defeated D. Marshall from Armagh golf club relatively easy. Jonnie Breadon and Wesley Coalter from Wellington progressed to the semi-finals when they defeated a pair from Donegal skipped by John Quinn by 13 shots to 8. Meanwhile the Wellington pair of Alan and Robert Graham booked their semi-final place by defeating Niall Cox and Michael McGrade from St Joseph's by 9 shots to 5. The first of the semi-finals turned out to be an easy passage for the Stubbs when in a completely one sided affair they overcome their opponents from Coalisland to deservedly progress to the final by 11 shots to 1.
The remaining semi between the two Wellington pairs turned out to be a more entertaining affair. Alan and Robert started this game in confident form with an impressive opening two shots but Jonnie and Wesley showed they were determined to book a final place when they chalked up two threes in the fourth and fifth end respectively to eventually win by 8 shots to 6. The scene was set for what promised to be an interesting final between two very experienced pairs and the spectators were not disappointed. At the end of the sixth end the Wellington pair had a slight advantage by a single shot, 5 shots to 4 but in what turned out to be the winning end, the Stubbs collected a three in the seventh to go on and end up very worthy winners of the 2012 Christchurch pairs by 8 shots to 6.
At the conclusion of play, Jean Parkinson the secretary of Christchurch and Western Zone convener thanked all the bowlers for their support and all the faithful members of the club for their assistance throughout the weeks bowling. Jean then presented all the finalists with their well earned prizes and Ronnie and Basil Stubbs with the perpetual cup .
