Western Juniors beaten to semi-final spot by Donegal
Brandon Power, Rossorry Bowling Club in action last Saturday for Western Juniors.
Newcomers to Junior Zone bowling, Donegal booked their semi final place on Saturday in this year's All Ireland Junior Inter Zone competition.
The area heats were held in the Unionist Hall Enniskillen and taking part were Western, Mid-Ulster, Donegal and South Tyrone.
Western had the perfect start in their three match qualifier with a resounding maximum five points from their encounter with South Tyrone when all three rinks chalked up victories. Best performance in this game came from Daniel Wilson's rink who completely outplayed their opposing rink from South Tyrone skipped by M Dice, and ended on a comprehensive 16 shots to 4 win. Lisa Mavitty's rink were finding their opposition rink skipped by T Watters, difficult opponents and were trailing by 8 shots to 2 after seven ends but in a superb turnaround chalked up nine shots in the remaining three ends to win by 11 shots to 8. In the remaining match in this game Robert Graham's Western rink were having a really nip and tuck affair against South Tyrone's D Malcolmson. Going into the last end Robert's rink were trailing by a single shot but in a brilliant finish chalked up a two in the last to win by 10 shots to 9.
Meanwhile in the other game that took place Donegal defeated Mid Ulster by the same margin 5 points to 0.
Western's next opposition was Donegal and our Juniors were very aware that a good result in this game was essential. Robert Graham's rink lead by example after they trounced their opposing Donegal rink skipped by G Glackin by 17 shots to 0.
Unfortunately the other two Western rinks were not as successful in this game with Daniel Wilson's rink finding the opposing skip M Gallagher in superb form and losing out by 9 shots to 6 while Lisa Mavitty's Western rink dropped a total of 10 shots in the last three ends against J Glackin to lose by a 17 shots to 5 margin.
With only collecting a single point out of this game Western needed Mid Ulster to collect some points against Donegal and they themselves needing to get maximum points against South Tyrone in the last game.
Daniel Wilson's rink recovered from their previous defeat and ended on a comprehensive 14 shots to 2 win against Mid Ulster's R Palmer, Robert Graham's rink completed their undefeated afternoon with a 13 shots to 7 win over D Davidson while Lisa Mavtty's rink edged victory over C O'Neill.
Western did get the maximum in their last game against Mid Ulster but unfortunately for them Donegal were too strong a team against South Tyrone and ended on a five point win.
An impressive all round good team performance by Western Juniors but full credit to Donegal who on the day fully deserved their coveted semi final place, in their first taste of Junior Zone bowling.
