There was to be double Ulster success for Ederney ABC as Aaron Baird and John McDonagh secured titles at the Boy 1,2,3 Ulster Championships in Derry.

Ederney A.B.C had qualified two boxers for the finals and were unlucky not to have a few more with Rory McCann, Charlie McDonagh and Rory Baird unfortunate not to qualify from a highly competitive Mid-Ulster Championships. All three boxers made it to the Mid-Ulster final were they all lost out on very close contests.

The two boxers that did qualify for the finals however, did not disappoint! Aaron Baird (Boy 2 31KG) and John McDonagh (Boy 2 63KG), who had trained hard for these championships, got the chance to fight for provincial honours.

Aaron was first into the ring against Jamie Pearson from St.John Bosco BC Donegal. Aaron started brightly, using his southpaw jab to good effect. He built up a strong lead after the first round which was important as this gave the youngster confidence. And it was much of the same for the rest of the contest, Aaron cleverly picking his opponent off with straight right and lefts. At the end of the bout, it was Aaron's hand that was raised as he ran out a clear winner on a score of 9-3. This was a huge achievement for the 12year-old as it was his first Ulster title.

Next into the ring was John McDonagh who was to face an opponent from the Cavan Boxing Club. Again, after a good start to the contest there was no turning back for John as he ran out a clear winner on a score of 14-9. This was also John's first Ulster title.

Both lads will look forward to representing both club and province at the upcoming All-Ireland Championships in the National Stadium in Dublin on Easter week. After this success both lads will go into these championships with loads of confidence and hope to perform to their best at the home of Irish Boxing.

The end of the year home tournament is also coming up for the other boxers in the club on April 12 in Lough Erne Hotel, Kesh, more details to follow.
