Enniskillen Rangers 6 Armagh Rovers 0 Enniskillen Rangers moved into the last 16 of the Irish Junior Cup for the first time since the 2007/08 season with another high scoring walk in the park at the Ball Range on Saturday against Armagh Rovers.

Rangers have bagged 36 goals in four Junior Cup games to make the last 16, admittedly against poor opposition, with striker Mark Cutler bagging 13 of those goals.

Saturday was more of the same with Rangers under little pressure and not looking back after player manager Michael Kerr struck home a left footed free kick early on. It was 4-0 by the break and six at the final whistle.

Indeed, Kerr is just delighted to be in the last 16 and while you can only beat what is in front of you, he knows tougher tasks will lie ahead with the draw due to be made last night (Wednesday).

“It’s great to be in the last 16,” enthused Kerr. “I thought it was a good performance from the boys and our superior fitness told, even after 30 minutes, we were stronger and quicker. We have been putting the work in at training and it is great to see it pay off. Training has been good, there is a good depth to the squad and there is good competition for places. I don’t think Armagh were as bad as the scoreline suggests but we can only beat what is in front of us and it is great to be in the draw. We are still in all three competitions at this stage of the season and that is a great positive and testament to all the boys. We just need to keep working hard at training and see where that takes us,” said Kerr who has added Danny Dunbar to his squad, signing the forward from Ballinamallard.

Rangers were on the front foot early on and when Kerr fired in a free kick from 25 yards on the right hand side they were well on their way.

Armagh probably enjoyed their best spell of the game after the opening goal threatening down the wings with Kerr clearing one off the line and another dangerous cross threatening Jerome Carleton’s goal.

Rangers doubled their advantage on the half hour mark and what a goal it was as the highly impressive Stuart Rainey collected the ball from Darrin Simpson and made a superb run down the left hand side before breaking into the box and coolly slotting home.

Rangers then put the game to bed before the break as captain Willie Burleigh pounced on a breaking ball in the box after a Simpson shot had been saved and fired home low into the net.

Mark Cutler then got his first of the day when Rainey found him unmarked at the back post and he slotted home for 4-0 at half time.

The second half was more of the same with Armagh battling hard but unable to produce any meaningful attacks while Kerr emptied the bench and kept the Rangers pushing forward.

Indeed, it was one of the substitutes Chris Currie who made an instant impression as he jinked in from the right and unleashed a superb drive into the top corner for 5-0.

Rangers did have chances to add to their tally Cutler, Burleigh and Currie going close before Cutler wrapped up the scoring with a brave header in the six yard box following a brilliant cross from the influential Adam Wallace.

In truth, Carleton did not have a save to make in the second half as Rangers progressed to the last 16 with a great degree of ease.

Tougher tests will surely lie ahead as the competition intensifies.
