Enniskillen Rangers manager Michael Kerr was delighted with his side’s performance as they blew away the challenge of Hill Street in Monday’s Junior Cup final at the National Stadium at Windsor Park.

Four first half goals had Rangers in firm control and they never looked like relinquishing their control on matters as they picked up the Junior Cup for a second time in their history.

Kerr could not have asked for much more from his players on Monday as they executed the game-plan to perfection.

“What a performance, yes we rode our luck at times and the big lad up top for Hill Street missed one or two chances but we took our chances.

“It is a massive pitch and we used it to our advantage. Mark Cutler and Stuart Rainey are handfuls for any team in Junior football and speed is really hard to mark. The two of them could play at a higher level so I’m delighted to have players of that calibre in my team.

“Hill Street are a good side but they couldn’t live with us, we have a bit of everything in this team and it showed today,” he added.

And he was also full of praise for his captain, Willie Burleigh.

“Willie put in a captain’s performance. In the first seconds he put in a tackle and that set the tone and away we went from that. For his two goals he was beside me one minute and then seconds later he was putting the ball in the back of the net at the far end.

“It’s the likes of your Burleighs, your Croziers and your Doogans who are the heartbeat of this club. Those boys wanted that so badly, Joe Doogan delayed his trip to Australia and this is what he did it for.”

However, he stresses as he has all year that it was about the entire squad.

“There was 14 of us involved today, you had two boys who didn’t get on and five or six lads who didn’t make the squad but they are all important and have all played their part.”

And Kerr states that it was the sweat and toil on the training pitch at the Ball Range that took them to the victory.

“To have won it with this bunch of boys, I’m so proud of each and everyone of them. Nobody sees the work that goes in on a Tuesday and Thursday night, they worked so hard for it and we put the hard yards in for this day.

“I said at the start of the year that our target was to get here and we came here to win and we did it.

“It means the world and a lot more. It’s the best day ever, 5-1 in Windsor Park to win the Junior Cup. We are going to enjoy the next few days” said an elated Kerr.

And he was delighted with the backing his players received from a large travelling support that made the trip from Enniskillen.

“What support we had. As soon as you walked out onto the pitch we could hear them and they have travelled a fair distance to be here to cheer us on and we really appreciated it.”

Kerr has put together a talented squad of players but he believes that it is the family feel to everything at the club that has been one of the main factors in their success.

“I sent the boys a message last night and it was one from the heart. I told them we are like a family here, we’re not just a team who meet up to play football and away we go, we are a crowd of friends who socialise together and do a lot of stuff together and that togetherness has really driven us on this year.

“We will be there on Friday night to support our Reserves in the Reihill Cup final and come the end of the year at the Dinner Dance it would be nice to have two cups on the table.

“It is not just about the firsts or the seconds, this is a tight knit club, everything is going in the right direction and we will push on,” he said.

However, the ‘Gers player-manager already has turned his thoughts to next season.

“I’m here for the long term and I hope the players stay on too.

“Now we need to put a consistency into out performances for next season. This has set the bar for next year and I’m already looking ahead to that,” he commented.
