The Juniors had a mixed bag of results at the Ardmore Playing Fields on Saturday at the Orchard Cup, where they competed against two Co. Armagh SupercupNI Junior squads and Dundalk Schoolboys League for the David Humphries Memorial Cup.

On the day, the side enjoyed one win and a one loss and gained a lot of valuable game time experience.

In this competition, each side plays two matches and the team who finishes top of the section after the two matches, wins the tournament.

Fermanagh Juniors first faced Co. Armagh SupercupNI.

It was Armagh who started the brightest and took an early lead in the sixth minut, from a well worked corner kick.

This seemed to kick-start Fermanagh into life; Jamal Tavares and Eimhin Curran provided a threat and it was the former who drew the game level in the 17th minute.

A good move on the left saw Tavares hammer home past the Orchard County goalkeeper.

The away side were now on top, Darragh Bryne was unlucky not to get on the end of an excellent Curran pass and a Caoilte Hamill effort curled just over the bar, before Tavares again found the target to put Fermanagh in front for the first time.

The midfielder unleashed a stunning effort from outside the area, which beat the keeper and hit the roof of the net to leave it 2-1 at the break.

In the second half both Curran and Sean Murray had opportunities to put Fermanagh further ahead, but both efforts failed to trouble the Armagh goal.

Armagh began to feel their way back into the contest and troubled the Ernemen’s defence.

Conor Courtney then had a shot from an acute angle that whistled just wide of the goal, before Ryan Beatty rolled his effort narrowly wide.

Armagh looked almost certain to equalise late on, only for the heroics of Sam McDonald and the Fermanagh defence keeping the opposition at bay.

Courtney rolled a late effort across the face of the goal as they held on to claim three points against the side who went on to win the David Humphries Cup.

The second game of the day saw Fermanagh face ‘Co. Armagh 2’ and this proved to be a much more difficult challenge.

Nathan Copeland had to be on hand early on, making two excellent saves in the opening minutes.

Armagh had a number of further opportunities to go in front, including a Jamal Tavares effort that went straight at the goalkeeper.

Copeland tipped another curling effort behind the post, before Amagh 2 did eventually take the lead in the 22nd minute, slipping an effort just underneath a busy Fermanagh goalkeeper.

Fermanagh started a lot brighter in the second half and put together some excellent passages of play; Tavares was unfortunate to be caught offside following great link up play with Curran and Adam Beckett, before Beckett pulled a low cross back to Conor Courtney, who tapped his effort narrowly wide.

Beckett and Courtney were linking up well together and both had chances to level the game.

However, Armagh were more clinical up front and slotted a second goal into the net in the 42nd minute.

Minutes later Fermanagh were presented with a great opportunity to equalise; Sean Murray was upended in the box and the referee pointed to the spot.

Murray bravely stepped up but saw his effort rattle the post.

Courtney saw his follow up attempt blocked and the danger was cleared.

Courtney had been threatening all day and got a deserved goal to halve the deficit, slotting beyond the onrushing goalkeeper following a great through ball from Jamie Stewart.

But Armagh soon restored their two goal advantage; a scramble from a free-kick saw the ball eventually go over the line to seal a 3-1 win for the hosts.
