Fivemiletown United made it double delight for the people of Clogher Valley when they defeated Hill Street from Lurgan 3-1 on penalties at Lakeview Park in Loughall.
Following on from the success of nearby Clogher Valley RFC, Fivemiletown brought home the Marshall Cup following the win over Hill Street.
Despite a nervy 0-0 draw, keeper Dave Ballantine was the hero for the Valley Stadium outfit when he made the crucial stops in the shoot-out to win the Marshall Cup. Successful spot kicks from Jason Gillespie, Stevie Erskine and the winning kick from club stalwart Dessie Gilmour saw Fivemiletown secure the trophy.
Manager Andy Parkinson was delighted to secure the silverware for the club and was more than happy with his side's hard working performance.
"The game itself was a hard fought affair. The pitch was really bumpy and didn't really help either side in terms of playing some passing football. To be honest chances were really few and far between and Hill Street perhaps could have nicked it at the end of extra time when they had a few really good chances to seal the tie."
Fivemiletown had chances of their own from the influential Gillespie, Erskine and centre half Stevenson but the Town were unable to get that elusive goal in the 120 minutes of football played.
Parkinson was quick to praise his defence and midfield who battled superbly against their Lurgan rivals.
"It was a real battle in the centre of the field, I thought our defence and midfield fought really well and I am delighted to have won the Marshall Cup."
Fivemiletown currently sit fifth in Intermediate A of the Mid Ulster League and will be hoping that this Marshall Cup victory will help the club to conclude their season on a high note and push on up the league table.
