Lisnaskea Rovers grabbed a morale boosting win against Island Magee IIs to progress to round two of the Coca-Cola Junior Cup. Rovers have had a tough start to the league campaign this year, but manager Gregory Copeland was delighted to record their first victory of the season with a side packed with teenagers.

“It was a good confidence booster,” he admitted. “From last year’s starting team we only had one player that started on Saturday. We had a lot of young lads making their Junior Cup debuts. We had one 16 year old, two 17 year olds and a couple of 18 year olds because we have had to go with what was left at the club this season. There is still work to be done and we are not perfect by a long shot but it was pleasing to get the result.” The most experienced player in the young side is Warren Holden, and the midfielder who recently made the switch from Lisnarick was on the score sheet after just three minutes to give Rovers the ideal start.

He lofted a free kick into the area from 35 yards out, and everyone missed the bouncing ball as it dropped in at the far post to give the home side the advantage.

Island Magee went in search of an equaliser and Rovers had 16 year old debutant Colin Copeland in goal to thank for maintaining their lead when he reacted well to get down to a shot and push it away from danger.

After 20 minutes Rovers doubled their advantage. Conor Beggan lofted a cross in from the right wing and Sean Keenan arrived late to rifle the ball into the roof of the net.

Copeland in the Rovers goal was called to make another smart save as they held on to their lead until the break, and shortly into the second half they went three goals ahead. Shane Ingram found Adam McKenna in the penalty area, and McKenna somehow had time to control the ball and shift it onto his left foot before firing home.

Island Magee responded well to the setback and got themselves back into the game with two goals in a five minute spell, but Rovers responded and scored a fourth to ensure the win.

McKenna broke down the left wing and played a one two with Sean Keenan before pulling the ball back to substitute Ryan Davidson who found the corner of the net from 18 yards.

Conor Beggan completed the victory with a late goal to confirm their place in the next round.
