Irvinestown Wanderers impressive start to the season continued on Saturday as they hit Enniskillen Athletic for five to maintain their winning start to the campaign.

Goals from Ronan Ormsby and Liam Murphy had Wanderers two goals to the good at the break and they added to their lead in the second half with Lyndon Johnston, Murphy and Gary Maguire all getting on the scoresheet in a 5-0 win.

“Again, defensively we were solid with Conor McGuigan playing a leaders role in the centre of the defence alongside Conor McAleer,” said Wanderers joint manager Dermot McCann. “We kept a clean sheet and we are scoring goals so things are ticking along nicely although we know that there is a long way to go and for long periods we were out of the game on Saturday so that is something for us to work on,” he added.

The visitors took the lead at Celtic Park with less than ten minutes played as Ronan Ormsby let fly with a 25 yard strike that flew over the head of Athletic goalkeeper Philip Leonard to the roof of the net.

And five minutes later Irvinestown doubled their lead as Liam Murphy cut in from the right before surling an effort beyond Leonard for 2-0.

Athletic did have chances as the half progressed with Gerard Keaveney twice failing to find the net when well placed while Darren Rodgers saw a header hit an opponent and go over the bar.

Wanderers did have the opportunity to stretch their lead five minutes before half time when Johnston was taken down in the box but Maguire’s penalty hit the post.

A third goal did arrive though three minutes into the second half when Ormsby and Murphy combined to pick out Johnston and despite his first shot being saved by Leonard, he followed up to slot home the rebound.

It was soon four as Murphy got on a ball over the top from Ormsby to fire in at the near post and Maguire wrapped up the scoring when his effort was spilled to the net by stand in goalkeeper Daniel Goan.

“We were missing a few players but that’s the way it will be for us and it is a matter of simply taking it one game at a time,” said Athletic manager Peter Goan. “I think that 5-0 flattered Irvinestown but I do feel they will go up. They have a lot of quality in their side,” he stated.
