Fermanagh Premiers continued their Milk Cup preparations with a friendly game against Sligo Rovers U19s on Saturday and despite the 4-0 scoreline, manager Robbie Walker was able to take plenty of positives out of the game.

Fermanagh had the better of things for long periods of the game but it is that old cliche of you have to take your chances which is what the Erne lads failed to do.

“There was lots of positives for us to take away from the game but the fact is that you have to finish your chances, which we didn’t, although it would be a lot worse if we were not creating any chances. The Sligo team was two years older than us and they were well drilled with a couple of their lads having played in the first team so from that respect it was a great workout and we are now looking forward to taking part in the Monaghan Cavan tournament on Saturday,” said Walker.

Fermanagh made a bright start to the contest and carved open a number of good chances in the early stages. Inside the opening minutes Conall Quinn and Timmy Boyd saw efforts fly past the post while Kyle Coalter forced the Sligo goalkeeper into a good save.

Fermanagh continued to press forward and Jordan Toal was narrowly wide from a free kick while Boyd played through Coalter but his shot was pushed away for a corner.

Jordan Breen’s delivery from corners was top quality all day and from one cross Coalter got on the end of the ball only to see his header come back off the upright.

Callum Frempong was next to have a go but his 23 yard drive was kept put by the goalkeeper although after this Sligo began to find their feet and they saw their first real effort crash off the crossbar while Fermanagh goalkeeper Gary Doherty was then forced into a smart save.

With 25 minutes on the clock, Sligo were to take the lead with a well worked move which was tapped home from close range.

And they were to go on and double their lead soon after although there was a touch of fortune about this one, the 25 yard strike taking a wicked deflection that wrong footed Doherty and ended up in the back of the net.

The Premier side though responded well to this set back and went on to finish the half strongly with Eoghan Curran and Frempong denied by the goalkeeper as the score remained 2-0 at the interval.

Walker made a few changes for the start of the second half but Fermanagh continued on the front foot and Caolan Ward had an effort pushed around the post while Curran was off target with another shot.

However, a more clinical Sligo side added to their lead against the run of play when a player was not picked up from a free kick and he had a free header to nod home for 3-0.

And with Fermanagh committing players forward in search of goal, Sligo hit them for a fourth with two minutes to go, the 4-0 score not a true reflection of the game as a whole.
