The Fermanagh Milk Cup Junior squad made the short trip to Monaghan on Friday evening and recorded an impressive 3-1 win over a Cavan and Monaghan Youth League side.

The Lakeland County dominated the first half and they produced one of their best halves of football this year.

Chances fell to Cassidy and Owens, but they couldn’t convert or find a way past the goalkeeper and when they eventually found a way past him, the woodwork was on hand to come to their rescue.

Fermanagh were rock solid in defence with Mahon and McAleer in complete control and Holder and Robinson were driving forward at every opportunity and supporting the forward line.

After a few minor changes in the second half, Fermanagh began to find their rhythm and they deservedly took the lead when Owens found a pocket of space and drove forward, before unleashing a thunderbolt of an effort into the top right hand corner.

The goal seemed to spur the home side into life and they equalised shortly after as their striker drove into space down the left before unleashing a fine effort into the far corner, despite the best efforts of Luke Johnston.

Fermanagh rallied round and they were soon in front again. Matthew Downey drilled a cross into the box and a home defender handled it. Jake Irvine led by example and grabbed the ball, before confidently dispatching the ball into the bottom left hand corner.

It was game set and match moments later as Toal crossed from a free-kick and after good pressure on the goalkeeper by Downey, he nipped in front of the ‘keeper and unselfishly squared the ball to McKervey, who hammered into the empty net.

Fermanagh continued to push forward at every opportunity but couldn’t add to their two goal lead and they had to be content with a 3-1 win over a good Cavan and Monaghan select side.
