Fermanagh Ladies picked up their first win in over a year as they began their Division Four campaign with a comprehensive victory over Derry in Brewster Park on Sunday.

Manager Emmett Curry was delighted with the win for his young charges and is hoping that they can now go on and build on this when they take on Kilkenny this weekend.

“They never won a match last year so they were absolutely delighted with the win and I am delighted for them. I know it is only one win, and it is only the first game, but if we had lost on Sunday then everybody would have been saying that nothing has changed. For me Sunday was all about getting the win and getting things up and running, that was important,” he commented.

Fermanagh can now travel to Kilkenny in a confident mood after Sunday’s win and Curry says they will be looking to make it two wins out of two.

“It is a young side apart from a few more experienced players so the win will have been a great boost for them. We can now go to Kilkenny this weekend and look to build on the Derry game. Hopefully we can get another win which would be very good before the break,” he added.

Fermanagh’s experienced players such as goalkeeper Roisin Gleeson, defenders Marita McDonald and Shauna Hamilton, midfielder Aine McHugh and forwards Sharon Murphy and Joanne Doonan were all prominent in the victory with Doonan helping herself to 3-03.

However, Curry reserved special praise for the young players in the squad.

“I thought the young girls in the team did very well and I was very proud of them. You had Allanah Leonard at midfield, you had Ellen McMahon and Naomi McManus playing really their first games at corner back. You had Nuala McManus who was very good and I also thought that Dannielle McManus was absolutely outstanding. I’m happy enough with how the game went,” stated Curry.
