Fermanagh made it two wins out of two in Lidl NFL Division Four with a 3-08 to 0-07 win away to Kilkenny on Sunday.

Emmett Curry’s side did the most of the damage in the first half when they raced into a 3-05 to 0-01 lead and although Kilkenny rallied in the second half, Fermanagh had done enough to secure the points on offer.

However, Curry feels Fermanagh will have a better idea of where they are when they take on a Wicklow side who have also won their opening two games in the next round of fixtures.

“Wicklow have won two out two and they are going to be strong so I think that will tell us more about how we are going. It’s a home game though and it’s one we will be looking to win,” said Curry.

Kilkenny were hammered in their opening game against Wicklow but they strengthened their hand for the visit of Fermanagh and Curry admits that it was a difficult encounter.

“It was a tough, physical game but the girls did well and get the win was the key thing,” he said. “We didn’t have a great second half but we were missing a few of our more experienced players and they are not easily replaced. I would be happy though to have two wins out two.”

Both sides were guilty of wasting chances over the course of the game but it was Fermanagh who were to enjoy the better of things in the first half as they managed to open up a sizeable advantage.

Sharon Murphy swooped for two goals in the opening 30 minutes while last week’s hat-trick hero Joanne Doonan also found the net in the first half. With Murphy, Doonan, Anna Boyle and Danielle McManus all lofting over points during the half, Fermanagh went in at the break with a 3-05 to 0-01 lead.

However, Kilkenny proved a much more stubborn opponent in the second half, and indeed they were to go on and outscore Fermanagh after the half time break as the Erne side laboured at times. Kilkenny chipped away at points during the second half and it required a very good save from Fermanagh goalkeeper Roisin Gleeson midway through the second half. Gleeson got down well to push the shot around the post to deny the home side a goal that could well have brought them right back into the game.

Fermanagh though did enough to see the game out and with Nuala McManus, Murphy and Doonan tagging on scores, they ran out 3-08 to 0-07 winners in the end.

Defensively, Courteney Murphy was solid at full back while Sarah McCarville, on her debut, performed well in the half back line. Maurita McDonald produced a strong display throughout while further forward Lisa Maguire made a lively contribution in the half forward line while Doonan and Murphy provided the bulk of the scores.
