Belcoo 0-12 Ederney 1-16 Belcoo’s search for a first win of the season continues following Saturday’s seven point defeat at home to Ederney.

Although the first half was a tight affair, a Mark McCauley goal midway through the first half had Ederney in charge at the break as they led by five points.

And the third placed side in the league maintained their advantage over the course of the second half as Belcoo struggled to close the gap with Ederney running out 1-16 to 0-12 victors in the end.

Peter Clarke’s Belcoo side have drawn three of their eight games to date which leaves them level with Teemore at the foot of the table as that first win has so far eluded them and Clarke knows that they have to do better if they are to lift themselves away from the bottom.

“If we keep doing the same old we will get the same old so we have to try and do something different and something better. We have to keep possession better, we have to stop giving away cheap goals and to do that we have to keep working hard at it,” he said.

At the other end of the table, Ederney are continuing to keep the pressure on the top two with Mickey Cassidy’s outfit two points behind second placed Erne Gaels who are a further point adrift of leaders Derrygonnelly.

Cassidy felt that the first half goal was key for his side.

“We were on top in the first half but it was not really showing on the scoreboard until we got the goal so that was important to give us a cushion and I thought that in the second half we were never really in danger. It is a difficult league so we are just pleased to have another two points on the board,” he added.

Ederney had the advantage of the breeze in the first half and they registered the opening three points of the game with Ryan Maguire, Paul McCusker and Chris Snow slotting over scores.

Johnny Feeley, who was Belcoo’s best performer on the day, landed the home side’s first score but after the sides exchanged points Ederney swooped for the crucial score of the game.

Mark McCauley was put through after good play down the right hand side and he made no mistake with a shot to the corner to make it 1-04 to 0-02 in the away side’s favour.

The sides shared the next eight points over the final 15 minutes of the half as Ederney maintained their five point advantage to the interval.

Paul McCusker and Darren McCusker were among the points for Ederney during this period while Feeley, Paul McGrath and Dean McDermott notched points for Belcoo to leave it 1-08 to 0-06 at the break.

Ederney were always able to keep Belcoo at arms length in the second half, the away side defending in numbers and then breaking at pace when they had possession.

Paul McCusker, Darren McCusker and McCauley all accounted for points for Ederney during the second half while Feeley, McGrath and substitute Philip Leonard all knocked over points for the O’Rahilly’s.

However, the goal that they required to get them back into contention never arrived and Ederney’s lead was never really troubled as they finished up seven point winners.

The games get no easy for Belcoo this Friday night when they visit Derrygonnelly while Ederney are away to Teemore on the same night.
