Newtownbutler 6-21 Derrygonnelly 2-05 Newtownbutler First Fermanaghs completed a memorable treble as they added the U4 A Championship title to the league and Feile crowns with what in the end was a comfortable win over Derrygonnelly Harps in Derrylin on Saturday.

This had the makings of a tight contest in the opening quarter with the sides locked together at 1-04 apiece after 20 minutes but Newtown took control in the final ten minutes of the half as they hit an unanswered 2-01 to go in with a 3-05 to 1-04 half time advantage.

And the First Fermanaghs controlled proceedings in the second half, bagging a further three goals to secure the championship victory and send them into this weekend’s National Feile na nOg in a confident frame of mind.

It was an altogether closer game though in the early stages of the contest with the sides exchanging points before Derrygonnelly swooped for the first goal of the game as Ronan McGovern’s long ball floated into the back of the Newtownbutler net in the fourth minute to put the Harps in front.

However, Newtown hit back with a goal of their own two minutes later as Sean Conlon raced in to fire home to make it 1-01 apiece.

Newtown, who were playing against the breeze, then landed the next three points, including two from Ger O’Keefe, but Derrygonnelly responded with the next three points to once again tie up the game. Ronan McGovern (2) and Odhran Harbinson landed the points for the Harps to make it 1-04 apiece.

However, Newtown wrestled control after this and Lochlann King fisted the ball to the net and O’Keefe converted a free before Caolan Swift’s deflected effort also ended up in the back of the net as they moved into a seven point advantage at half time.

Derrygonnelly did make a good start to the second half as Conor Gallagher rattled the back of the Newtown net to close the gap back to four. But that was as close as Derrygonnelly got as Newtown pulled away.

Swifts hit back within a minute with Newtown’s fourth goal of the contest and they went on to tag on a string of points to put the game out of the Harps reach.

O’Keefe was again among the points with scores coming from both play and frees by the Newtown captain while Diarmuid King and Joey Clancy also tagged on points as the First Fermanaghs pulled clear.

King then finished to the net following a good ball from O’Keefe while Derrygonnelly had a point from Gallagher.

Newtown though bossed the game to the finish and O’Keefe, King, Clancy, Conlon and Cian Swift all landed points before Joey Clancy rifled home a sixth goal for Newtown in the final moments as they finished up 6-21 to 2-05 winners.
