Kinawley 3-08 Irvinestown 1-08

Kinawley emerged as six-point winners as they remain unbeaten after four games in what has been a superb start to the season for the Brian Borus. They were full value for their win over Irvinestown although the visitors may feel that the margin of victory somewhat flattered the home side.
For Kinawley manager, Mark Monaghan, however, there is no sense of getting carried away with the terrific opening to their league campaign;
“Obviously we are very happy and to get four points from the weekend is great but it is a long season and things can change very quickly. We are pleased to have so many points on the board at this stage of things but we just have to keep going and not really think about what we have done and concentrate instead on just keeping things going.”
For Irvinestown boss, Sean Donnelly there was a sense of frustration after the game;
“I thought we competed quite well but made a few silly mistakes that led to goals and you cannot be doing that. If you concede three goals in a game then it is going to make it very hard to win so we will have to improve on cutting out the mistakes.”
Ruairi Corrigan was to prove a pivotal figure in this game hitting 2-02 over the hour. At halftime the home side led 1-05 to 0-05 in what had been a tight affair with Corrigan’s goal being the difference. Sean McManus and Shaun Doherty along with Corrigan were on point duty for the Brian Borus with the goal coming on the 10-minute mark following a mistake from an Irvinestown kick out.
For the visitors, Stephen Sheridan was a solid figure throughout and he contributed a brace of points in the first half with Gary Maguire and Ronan Ormsby also on target.
Upon the resumption, McManus and Shay Keenan hit two quick points for Kinawley and this was followed up by a Brendan McManus goal to put the home side eight points up. To their credit, however, Irvinestown refused to throw in the towel and over the next twenty minutes they were the better side and reduced the deficit to just three points. Their goal came from Michael Mahon who had moved to wing half forward for the second half and was proving a dangerous figure.
But just as they had worked themselves back into the game a penalty was awarded at the other end with the visitors far from happy with the decision. An Irvinestown defender, while in possession, was adjudged to have dragged a forward to the ground and Corrigan stepped up and dispatched the resultant kick with aplomb. For the losers John Doonan and minor, Sean Mahon, both contributed well to the cause while for Kinawley Conor Murphy was once again a driving force with Corrigan proving elusive.
