Gerry Quinlan celebrates his early goal which set Teemore on the way to victory.<<

Teemore 2-13; Tempo 0-11;

Teemore caused something of an upset on Sunday at Brewster Park in the Quinn Insurance SFC as they dispatched of Tempo to set up a quarter-final clash against Roslea.

The Shamrocks have really struggled to make an impact in the league this year but they managed to turn things around on Sunday with a fine display to overcome a disappointing Tempo.

Peter Quinn’s Teemore outfit came flying out of the blocks and with only nine minutes on the clock they had built up a seven point lead, 1-05 to 0-01, with their direct brand of football causing problems for Tempo.

The Maguires though did finally settle into the game, cutting the deficit to three points by the break before drawing level early in the second half. And at that point it seemed as if they would push on for the win but to Teemore’s credit they re-established their superiority and in the end they ran out easy winners.

Teemore could not have asked for a much better start to the contest as they knocked over four points in the opening five minutes of the encounter. Sean Curry fired over three of these points while John Fitzpatrick also chipped in with a point, knocking over after Gerry Quinlan had a goal chance saved by Matthew Jackson in the Tempo goal.

This start seemed to give Teemore a huge confidence boost with Jason McCaffrey and Mark Donohoe giving them a strong footing at midfield, while it left Tempo a bit shell-shocked, the Maguires looking all at sea in the opening spell.

Ryan Keenan got Tempo off the mark following good play by Daryl Keenan but Teemore continued to tag on scores as Ciaran Brady launched over a fine free from close to the sideline before Quinlan scored the opening goal. The full forward collected a cross field pass from John Fitzpatrick and powered his way past Rory Foy before producing a deft lobbed finish to the back of the net to make it 1-05 to 0-01.

Tempo finally kicked into action after this and slowly but surely they started to get themselves into the game.

Cathal McCaffrey broke forward to notch a good score and this was followed by a fine point from Brian Jackson.

Quinlan replied with another point for Teemore but the next four scores all came for Tempo as they clawed their way back to within two points.

Thomas Dunne and McCaffrey again made it 1-06 to 0-05 before Ryan Keenan knocked over a terrific effort from the right. From the kick out Tempo regained possession and the ball was fed to Aidan Breen who fired over as Tempo made it 1-06 to 0-07.

Ciaran Brady did knock over for Teemore at the end of the half but Tempo would have been satisfied to be going in three points adrift at the break given the disastrous start they had made.

And Sean Breen’s side looked to have the momentum on their side as they tagged on the first three points of the second half to get back on level terms. Aidan Breen and Daryl Keenan registered points before Jackson lofted over the equaliser, making it 1-07 to 1-10.

However, instead of Tempo pushing on it was Teemore who managed to re-assert themselves in the game.

John Fitzpatrick and Sean Curry knocked over points to edge them back in front and with 43 minutes played the decisive moment of the contest arrived.

A long ball towards goal was gathered by Curry and as he was about to pull the trigger he was taken down by Frank Kelly.

Curry dusted himself down before powering his penalty high into the top corner of the net to give Teemore a five point advantage and they were always in control of the encounter to the finish.

Curry stretched the lead to six from a free before Conor Meehan drove over the bar for Tempo. Tempo though were struggling to break through the Teemore rearguard in which Barry Owens was a composed figure.

The final three points all went the way of the Shamrocks with Jason MCaffrey, Quinlan and John Fitzpatrick all rattling over scores while Ryan Keenan thundered a shot off the junction of the crossbar and post for Tempo. In truth though the game was already up for the Maguires at this point with Teemore progressing, leaving Tempo to concentrate on the league.
