The Q Factor.. Seamus Quigley dances past a floundering Belcoo defence to score the second goal in Roslea’s 15 point championship win at the Brewster Park on Sunday as Mark McGovern, James McGrath, Niall Leonard and Ryan Leonard look on helplessly.<<

Roslea manager Peter McGinnity was playing down his side’s performance in their championship victory over Belcoo on Sunday. Roslea enjoyed a comfortable win in what was billed as the tie of the round but McGinnity feels that a couple of important things went his side’s way at Brewster Park.

“There was one or two incidents that went our way and if they had gone Belcoo’s way then it could have been a much different game. Our first goal was one of them as it would have made a big difference for Belcoo to have only went in two points down at half time having played into the breeze in the first half. And then at the start of the second half they hit the crossbar and if that had gone in it would have brought them right back into it. I was happy with the performance but to be honest I was more pleased with the win as to win any championship match is good,” said McGinnity.

Roslea will now face Teemore next weekend in the quarter-finals and McGinnity expects a tough test from Peter Quinn’s side.

“Teemore are a lot stronger now than they were at the start of the league having got players back from injury and they will be a lot better for having won a championship match,” he commented.

Teemore showed signs of improving form on Sunday as they proved too strong for Tempo. A flying start gave the Shamrocks the impetus and although Tempo fought back to level the game early in the second half, Teemore responded to once again pull away.

“It was a good win for us and we would be fairly happy but we’re also aware that most things went our way on the day and that rarely happens,” said Teemore manager Peter Quinn.

He added: “Our league form has been poor and we would have taken any sort of win before the game so we will not be getting carried away. We have Roslea in the next round now and after their win over Belcoo on Sunday they will be strong favourites.”

Teemore also featured Barry Owens at full back and the former All Star produced a solid performance as he battles his way back from injury.

“Barry did well. It’s only his third game back for us but he is getting better with every game,” commented Quinn.

Newtownbutler also booked their place in the last eight although this was a much tighter affair with it taking a wonderful late point from Paul Johnston to secure a one point win.

Newtown manager Vinnie Connolly felt that after a disappointing opening to the game his side upped their performance in the second half.

“Our ball handling was poor and we made mistakes in the opening 20 minutes or so but we made a few changes and after that we improved. It was important to get the opening score of the second half and we did that, and I thought we played well in the second half,” said Connolly.

Newtown had been four points up as the game drew to a close but Derrygonnelly managed to get back on level terms. However, Newtown showed great character to go on and grab the winning point.

“We worked a short kick out and worked the ball well up the field for Paul Johnston to hit a great strike over the bar. I suppose it was a game that could have gone anyway but we’re delighted to have won,” stated Connolly, whose side will now meet Devenish in the last eight.

Enniskillen also sealed their place in the quarter-finals of the competition with a five point margin of victory over Kinawley following their encounter at Lisnaskea on Friday night.

Gaels manager Gerry Love was satisfied that his side fulfilled their objective of making it through to the next round.

“We realise that there were things we could have done better but we set out to win the game, we did that, and we’re glad to be in the next round,” he stated.

And Love would also expect his side to improve before they take on Erne Gaels in the quarter-finals.

“We didn’t have a competitive game in weeks and we knew that Kinawley would keep at it for the full 60 minutes. I know though that there will be an improvement made before the next game,” he said.
