Joy and despair... Lisnaskea celebrate Shireen Green’s opening goal Lisnaskea Emmetts Ladies won their first Senior Championship title.
Lisnaskea 5-07; Brookeborough 2-06;
History was made on Sunday afternoon when Lisnaskea were crowned Senior Champions for the first time in their history. The Emmetts had been beaten finalists for the past two years but eventually made the breakthrough with a comprehensive victory over near neighbours Brookeborough.
Lisnaskea’s ability to hit Brookeborough on the counter attack caused the Heber McMahon’s massive problems as the game wore on. Brookeborough got a great start to the match leading by 1-02 to 0-01 after only eight minutes. The goal coming in the eightth minute after Shireen Green’s shot was initially stopped by Donna Gilroy. The rebound fell perfectly for Martina Boyle who palmed it to the back of the net.
Lisnaskea’s response was swift though, Louise Slevin and Sharon Little picking off points before the latter picked out her sister with a precision pass. Caroline fielded the ball high above the opposition and made no mistake from eight yards to leave the score 1-03 to 1-02.
From the kick-out Lisnaskea turned over possession in midfield and Claire Woods raced up field, playing a one-two with Sharon Little before unleashing a thunderous shot to the back of the net. Two more points from Louise Curran and Sharon Little extended the lead further before Brookeborough finally had their say. A goal from Shireen Greene raised a huge cheer from the Brookeborough supporters and there was now only a goal separating the sides.
With 27 minutes played there was some controversy. Sharon Little was fouled close to or inside the 14 metre box. Initially referee Jim Shannon from Magheracloone indicated a free but then signalled a penalty as he arrived in the box. Caroline Little hit it low and hard to the keeper’s right to leave the half time score 3-05 to 2-02 in favour of Lisnaskea.
In the second half, Aisling Moane was first to hit the target with a point. Brookeborough were enjoying a fair bit of possession at this stage but Lisnaskea were able to break down their attacks and turn over possession time and time again. Sharon Little resumed the scoring for Lisnaskea with a goal in the 10th minute of the second half. Some good work by Tara Hughes Little found Sharon and she made a trademark run, selling the dummy to Sarah Stewart before finding the back of an empty net.
Brookeborough continued to work hard and hit three consecutive points, Aisling Moane, Shireen Greene and Edel Campbell all chipping in with scores. Lisnaskea’s lightning quick forwards were causing problems though and with 26 minutes gone they got their fifth and final goal. A move involving Tara Hughes Little, Claire Woods, Sharon Little and finally Caroline Little left the score 5-05 to 2-06.
Lisnaskea finished strongly with two points from Caroline Little (free) and Louise Curran as they claimed their first ever senior title.
Player of the match was awarded to Claire Woods, not only for her goal but for some tremendous and unselfish work in the middle of the park. There were many contenders for this award on the Lisnaskea team, namely Shauna McCrystal, Caroline Little and Sharon Little. Brookeborough can take many positives from the game and had some fine performances from Edel Campbell, Nuala McManus and Aileen Moane.
