Brian Og Maguire’s Lisnaskea side are favourites for the Intermediate title.<<
The Kevin Courtney Car Sales Intermediate Football Championship swings into action this weekend with eight teams battling it out for the semi-final berths in the competition.
Division One side Lisnaskea are going to be red hot favourites to get their hands on the cup but the likes of Brookeboro will be hoping that they can have their say in the competition. The first quarter-final takes place on Friday night with the game between Belnaleck and Coa in Maguiresbridge. Belnaleck represented Fermanagh in the Ulster Junior Championship last year after producing a brilliant performance to overcome Maguiresbridge in the Fermanagh final.
Belnaleck have brought through a number of fine underage teams in recent years and won the minor league this year but they will be coming up against a Coa side who have been making great strides over the last couple of years.
Having taken the decision to step up to senior football, the O’Dwyers have not looked out of place and are currently sitting joint fourth in the Division Two table. They have a number of very steady performers and the fact that they have been playing at a higher level than their opponents should take them into the semi-finals of the competition.
On Saturday evening Derrylin will take on Brookeboro in Lisnaskea in a curtain raiser to the Roslea v Teemore SFC meeting. The two Division Two sides should provide an entertaining encounter and although Brookeboro will be fancied to make it into the last four, if Derrylin can show the same spirit they showed in pushing Enniskillen to a point last Friday night in the league then they will have a chance.
Derrylin showed that night that they have a potent goal threat and this is something that Brookeboro will have to guard against if they are to secure their place in the semis. The Heber McMahons though should come through. They are challenging at the right end of the table and still maintain a slight hope of promotion. And with the likes of Tommy McElroy and Niall Rooney have the players to take them to the win.
Favourites Lisnaskea enter the fray on Sunday afternoon and they should prove much too strong for Aughadrumsee. The Emmetts are a steadily improving side and under Peter Clarke they are an organised outfit who are in the top half of the Division One table after a one year stint in Division Two. John Woods, Daniel Kille, Brian Og Maguire and Mark Little backbone this Lisnaskea side and they should have little trouble in getting past Aughadrumsee. Aughadrumsee are rooted to the bottom of the Division Two table without a win to their name this season and anything other than a comfortable Lisnaskea win would be a major surprise. The last quarter-final has been put back until next Wednesday (August 25) with Irvinestown coming up against Maguiresbridge. The sides are evenly matched in the league, both having won four games, and taking that into consideration there should not be much separating the sides. Irvinestown have recently taken part in Celebrity Bainisteoir and played Meath side Nobber last week so they should be well prepared and they will be fancied to come through this tie.
