Back to winning ways...Belcoo manager Raymie Gallagher.
Belcoo 5-16; Erne Gaels 2-09;
Belcoo managed to put last weekend’s miserable performance in the Senior Championship behind them with an easy victory over bottom side Erne Gaels on a scoreline of 5-16 to 2-09 on a warm Sunday afternoon.
The home side got their account underway straight from the throw-in. A long ball was knocked down to Ciarán Flaherty who squared it to Brian Cox for the simplest of tap-ins and a goal.
Ronan Ferguson then got the first point of the game after a poor clearance from Stephen Ryder and the same player converted Belcoo’s second goal from close range before a John Carigan free made it 2-02 within five minutes. Erne Gaels were rattled but did manage a goal and point from Seamus Ryder.
It was not long before Belcoo found the net again. This time Kieran Leonard converted from close-in. Seamus Ryder replied with a single point for the visitors.
The fourth goal came soon after Niall McGovern was fouled in the box. Paul McGrath stepped up and calmly slotted the penalty home to leave it 4-02 to 1-02 after a quarter of an hour.
In the final quarter of the half, Belcoo kicked five unanswered points. Two from Ciarán Flaherty and one each from Kieran Leonard, Mark McGovern and Ryan Leonard meant that Belcoo had the game wrapped up more or less at half time with an unassailable 4-07 to 1-02 lead.
The second half was a more evenly contested affair with the home side taking their foot off the pedal and the visitors getting in for a number of easy scores.
Points from Seamus Ryder and Thomas McCann and a goal from McCann brought about a bit of a comeback but Belcoo continued to pop over scores with three each from Kieran Leonard and Flaherty while Seamus Conlon and Ronan Ferguson also got on the score sheet.
Points from midfielder Mullan and full forward O’Shea were consolation points for the visitors before Cox got his second goal of the game after good work from Ferguson.
A point from Ferguson wrapped the scoring and brought an end to a high scoring affair.
In the end it was an easy victory for Belcoo with solid performances throughout the team while for Erne Gaels they will need to pick themselves up for their quarter-final game against Enniskillen next week. There were some encouraging signs, however, with Seamus Ryder showing up well.
