Roslea Shamrocks celebrate winning the Reserve A Championship.
Roslea 1-13; Belcoo 1-08;
Roslea secured the Reserve A Championship title at Brewster Park on Sunday with a five point win over Belcoo.
The Shamrocks had dumped Belcoo out of the Senior Football Championship a week previously and they managed to heap more misery on the O’Rahilly’s on Sunday.
Peter McGinnity’s side lead from the start and although Belcoo closed back to within two points midway through the second half following a Patrick Burns goal it was the Shamrocks who finished the stronger to claim the title.
However, Belcoo will be disappointed that they did not make more of a decent opening to the encounter when they created a couple of goal chances. Johny Feeley smashed one shot off the post while Shain Gallagehr had another that flew narrowly wide of the goal.
Indeed the only score in the opening period was to go to Roslea with Ryan McCormack the point scorer.
Belcoo finally got off the mark midway through the first half with a point from Feeley and the game remained close as Liam Lynch and Feeley exchanged points before stroked over a good point to put Roslea into a 0-03 to 0-02 lead.
The Shamrocks, though, had much the better of the latter stages of the half as they began to open up a lead. Liam Lynch, Dermot Reilly and McCormack all notched points before Quigley fired in a goal to put them into a 1-06 to 0-02 lead. Patrick Burns did reply with a converted free but at the break Roslea held a six point advantage.
The sides were to trade scores in the third quarter with Sean Quigley (2) and Brendan McKenna tagging on points for the Shamrocks while Belcoo hit back with scores from Sean McNulty, Burns, Gavin Leonard and John Carrigan to leave it 1-09 to 0-07 as the contest entered the final quarter.
With Seamus Conlon becoming more prominent at midfield, Belcoo were starting to get on top and when Burns was picked out by Feeley before rifling a shot to the back of the net, it looked to have set up an interesting conclusion to the contest with only two points now between the sides.
Belcoo then had a number of attacking opportunities but they failed to take advantage of this and Roslea hit them with scores from Niall Cosgrove and Sean Quigley although Burns did toss over a point for Belcoo. As the game drew to a close three points divided the sides but it was Roslea who were to make the stronger push at the death and points from Aidan McMahon and Quigley made sure of the victory for Roslea.
