Teemore’s Ruairi Maguire is sandwiched between Paul McKenna and Kevin Cosgrove during Roslea’s six point win in Lisnaskea on Saturday night.
Roslea 0-13; Teemore 0-07
New York Cup favourites Roslea secured their passage into the semi-finals of the competition last Saturday night with what, in the end, was a comfortable six point victory over Teemore in Lisnaskea.
Despite dominating for long periods in the first half, Roslea only managed to etch out a two point advantage at the break, Sean Curry’s immaculate place kicking keeping Teemore within touching distance.
Curry though was to pick up an injury on the stroke of half time and Roslea moved three points ahead early in the half through a Sean Quigley point.
A pivotal moment followed when Teemore’s Ruairi Maguire was put in on goal but his effort was well saved by Sean Boyle in the Roslea goals and from this they kicked on to seal the win. Three successive points moved them into a six point lead and they were able to see out the remainder of the tie to put them into the last four.
This was not as convincing a performance from Roslea as their victory over Belcoo but they were still impressive in stages and they had a number of fine performers.
In attack Seamus Quigley again grabbed the headlines, scoring 0-07 of his side’s total following an intriguing battle with Barry Owens, while he was ably assisted in the forward line by Liam Lynch. At midfield James Sherry and Kevin Cosgrove gave their side a good foothold while behind them Niall Cassidy did a solid job when moved back to full back.
Peter McGinnity’s side were quick to settle into the stride and they controlled the play in the opening ten minutes as they carved open a 0-04 to 0-00 lead.
Niall Cosgrove, Liam Lynch and a terrific score from Seamus Quigley got them going inside the first five minutes and when Lynch banged over his second of the game it looked as if Roslea were going to be in for a comfortable evening.
However, Teemore finally began to work their way into the game although they were relying on the free taking of Curry to keep them in contention.
Curry lobbed over two frees to make it 0-04 to 0-02 but when Quigley responded with two frees for Roslea, the second a long range one, it saw them regain their four point advantage.
Curry, from a free, and Kevin Cosgrove exchanged points as Roslea maintained the four point lead but Teemore finished the half the stronger of the sides and Curry drilled over a superb free before Ciaran Brady rounded his marker and lofted the ball over the bar to bring the gap back to two points by the interval, 0-07 to 0-05.
A knock sutained by Curry at the end of the first half saw him unable to play any part in the remainder of the contest and it was Roslea who edged three in front at the start of the half when Sean Quigley collected a high, long ball and fired over the bar.
Teemore though went close to finding the perfect response to this as they managed to cut open the Roslea backline as they put Ruairi Maguire through. Maguire placed his shot low to the goalkeeper’s right but Boyle managed to get down and push the effort away for a ‘45.
Having survived this scare Roslea were to push on and three points in a seven minute spell put them into a comfortable six point lead by the midway stage of the half, all three points arriving from the boot of full forward Seamus Quigley. Quigley took a short free and when it was returned to him he lobbed it over the bar. He then followed it up with another point from play and one from a free as they moved into a 0-11 to 0-05 lead.
Having opened up a sizeable advantage, Roslea were content to sit back and soak up anything Teemore had to throw at them in the closing ten minutes. Ciaran Brady registered his side’s first score with a converted free 21 minutes into the half, and Declan Drumm also lofted over a free to give Teemore hope.
However, another two Quigley frees wrapped up the victory for Roslea while Teemore finished the game with 14 players after Gary Fitzpatrick was sent off after picking up two yellow cards.
