'We have to play to our best' - Corrigan
Dom Corrigan is aware that his St. Michael's side will have to show a big improvement on Saturday from their league final defeat to Omagh.<<
St. Michael's coach Dom Corrigan knows that if his side are to have any chance of overcoming Omagh CBS on Saturday at Brewster Park in the MacRory Cup quarter-final then they are going to have play to their full potential.
The Enniskillen school produced a disappointing display in going down 1-15 to 0-09 in the MacCormack Cup decider to Omagh at the end of November and Corrigan has been using the intervening period to try and iron out the problems that arose on that night.
"We're looking forward to it," said Dom. "It has been a long break since the league final and were grateful for that because it gave us the chance to look at our performance that night, a performance which was not good enough and wouldn't be good enough on Saturday either."
St. Michael's have played a number of challenge games as they look to prepare for Saturday's encounter with the Tyrone side and he explains that the whole focus os on getting a performance at Brewster Park in the quarter-final.
"We've worked away very quietly and had a number of challenge games with a mixed bag of results really. At the end of the day though it is about how we perform on the day. We're focussing on everybody performing to what they are capable of performing. All I can ask is that everybody performs to what they are capable of and then we'll see where that takes us. I feel that if we can do that then we will have a chance but I know for sure that if we don't perform to that level then we will not beat Omagh," he said.
Omagh showed on that occasion whay they are considered one of the favourites for the MacRory Cup this year, and while Corrigan is aware of the threat they pose, he is loooking to focus more on his own side.
"In the final we were outplayed by Omagh all over the pitch and us producing a huge improvement on Saturday is essential. The big thing for is to focus on ourselves and try and get the best out of ourselves. We can't afford to concentrate too much on Omagh. If we are to get a result we need to produce our best performance," he stated.
Given that they won the previous meeting so comprehensively, Omagh will start Saturday's game as firm favourites but Corrigan is not about to start building up the Tyrone school as he and Omagh CBS manager Kieran Donnelly are well acqainted.
"I know Kieran Donnelly very well and he knows me very well so we are not going to start playing mind games and both of us know that championship football is a different ball game," he commented.
And he does not feel that there is any advantage in the game being played at Brewster Park.
"The boys are well used to playing club football at Brewster Park and we are looking forward to getting a good home crowd behind us. The venue though will have no bearing on the game, Omagh won the league final at Brewster Park. No, it is about going out with the right attitude and trying to produce a performance."
What Corrigan is hoping though is that his players can go out and enjoy the contest.
"It is a quarter-final of the MacRory Cup and that is something to look forward to. At the start of the year our target was to to get to the knock-out stage and now that we are here we can concentrate on trying to win that."
