Enniskillen Gaels made it an U14 league and championship double as they edged out Belnaleck in a thrilling encounter in Kinawley on Tuesday night.

In a thoroughly entertaining contest, Enniskillen were never behind although Belnaleck displayed great character and spirit to claw their way back into the game on a number of occasions.

The Gaels went in at the break with a seven point advantage only to see it wiped out within three minutes of the restart as Belnaleck hit back. Enniskillen then reasserted themselves to pull eight clear but back again came Belnaleck and twice they got to within a point in the dying minutes only for Enniskillen to hold on with a Conor Love point in injury time sealing a two point victory.

Enniskillen blazed into an early advantage as they raced into a 2-01 to 0-00 lead after only three minutes.

Gerard Agnew slotted home from close range and this was followed by a goal and a point from the lively Conor Love.

Belnaleck though soon got into their stride and they were soon among the goals themselves as Jamie Magee thumped home before the tricky Dara McBrien converted a free to make it 2-01 to 1-01 with only seven minutes played.

The Gaels replied to this with three points on the bounce from Love (2) and Callum Jones but Belnaleck were to enjoy the better of the next spell as they began to get their hands on more ball around the middle third, and they accounted for four of the next five points.

Garvin Quigley clipped over a point which was answered by Enniskillen’s Jamie Moore but successive points from Garret Kavanagh and Quigley (2) reduced the deficit to three points.

Enniskillen though were to finish the half stronger and they registered four points in a row from Love, Jones, Moore and Josh Horan to leave it 2-09 to 1-05 at the interval.

Belnaleck though came flying out of the blocks at the start of the second half and they quickly whittled away the Enniskillen lead as Magee bagged his second goal within 30 seconds of the restart.

This was followed by a goal from Oisin Monaghan and when Quigley lofted over a point it brought the sides level at 2-09 to 3-06.

The momentum at this early stage was all with Belnaleck and it was the turn of the Gaels to dig deep as they hit back with two quick-fire goals to regain the upperhand in a fascinating contest.

Matthew McAleer and Agnew both hit the back of the Belnaleck in a 90 second period and when Ethan Beresford and Josh Horan lobbed over points it appeared to put Enniskillen in firm control of matters.

Once again though Belnaleck responded as Damian McLoughlin, McBrien and Quigley registered points with the Gaels sole response during this being a Jones free.

And when Jack Maxwell fired in a goal for Belnaleck it left three between the sides with ten minutes to play.

At this stage Belnaleck had their tails up and McLoughlin was unfortunate to see a effort come back off the crossbar although with Quigley and McBrien knocking over points it left one in it with five to go.

The gaels though defended resolutely in the latter minutes of the contest with Fergal Quinn at full back playing a leading role and with 59 minutes played a calmly taken goal by Barry Maguire seemed to have ended Belnaleck’s hopes as Enniskillen edged four clear.

However, the hard working Magee blasted home another goal for Belnaleck to again leave one it, 5-12 to 5-11, in added on time but the final say fell to Love who clipped the ball over the bar to secure the win for Enniskillen.
