Derrygonnelly were to recover from nine points down to claim a point at a wet and windy MacNean Park in Belcoo last Sunday.

Afterwards Derrygonnelly manager Paul Greene was delighted to get a point: “It’s never an easy place to come to and to come here after a hugely disappointing week for the club it was great to get a point at the end. We have Erne Gaels this weekend and it’s another game to try and get the points in as we look to consolidate top six and then hopefully top four.” Belcoo assistant manager Adrian McCallion was philosophical about his side’s point. “It was disappointing to let such a lead slip but in saying that in the testing weather conditions we will take the point. It wasn’t great to watch with the weather making it a tough spectacle. Ciaran Flaherty has aggravated the same hamstring again and at the moment its touch and go for the championship for him, he has been to the physio and we’re working on him.” Belcoo started the brighter of the two sides with points coming from a Ciaran Flaherty free, Paul McGrath and John Carrigan as the hosts raced into an early three point lead. Derrygonnelly though responded rather confidently with three fine points of their own coming from Declan Cassidy and Paul Ward (2) after good work from Jonathan McGurn for the third score.

The play was disjointed at times in the first half as the persistent rain and driving wind made the game extremely difficult for both sides. Ryan Jones who was making his usual driving runs found the posts with an excellent score from 40 yards before his own County team mate Brian Cox soon responded to make it 0-04 apiece after 19 minutes.

Jonathan McGurn nudged Derrygonnelly back into the lead once again but from the 22nd minute to half time Belcoo were to blitz Derrygonnelly with a brilliant 2-02 in a devastating spell.

Barry McGovern, who was full of running throughout, fired over in the 22nd minute before Philip Leonard made it 0-06 to 0-04. In a whirlwind 60 seconds Belcoo were to fire in two goals, the first coming from Brian Cox as he raced clear to fire his low shot into the bottom left corner, while from the resulting kick out the ball made its way to first half substitute Shane McCabe who was taken down inside the penalty area after which goalkeeper James McGrath come forward to hit the back of the net against his opposite number Dermot Feely as Belcoo led at half time 2-06 to 0-05.

Derrygonnelly started the second half well with Garvan McGinley winning a breaking ball which saw Ryan Jones get on the end of his pass to put six between the sides. Belcoo hit back almost immediately through John Carrigan as he got on the end of a free flowing move to fist his effort to the net as Belcoo raced nine clear with just three minutes played of the second half.

Derrygonnelly though finally awoke from their slumber and played some fantastic football which will leave the Harps management wondering what could have been seven days previous.

Paul Ward fired over a free before Jonathan McGurn scored a well struck point from a 45 as the Derrygonnelly revival gathered momentum.

Ryan Jones then set up Cormac Glynn who tapped into the net before Paul Ward and Jonathan McGurn (2) made it 3-06 to 1-11 with ten minutes remaining.

The Harps were then to lose midfielder Maurice Cassidy for a red card offence but still held their own to strike three wides before Garvan Jones fired over a well struck score with three minutes left to make the sides all level and leave both sides gaining a point.

There were chances right at the death for Shane McCabe and Declan Cassidy to hit the headlines but both efforts failed to produce a score as the sides settled for a point.
