Enniskillen Gaels secured the Division 2B title with a 3-08 to 0-11 victory over Aghadrumsee at Brewster Park on Sunday.

Ultimately, it was the Gaels ability to find the back of the net that proved decisive, Warren Dixon’s side bagging three goals over the course of the hour while Aghadrumsee carved open a couple of goal chances but were unable to take them.

There was five points dividing the sides at half time with Enniskillen leading 2-05 to 0-06, the goals coming from Sean McAleer and Richie O’Callaghan.

And although Aghadrumsee rallied at the start of the second half, a third Gaels goal from the boot of Conor McAleer assured them of the win.

“It was nice to finish the season with a win especially as we had not done anything for the last five weeks as we didn’t know when the game was going to be played. There has been a good improvement in the boys since we started out in March and they are moving in the right direction but we know that there is a lot more work to be done,” said Dixon.

Aghadrumsee joint manager Ciaran Carey thought his side did plenty of good things on Sunday but he felt Enniskillen goalkeeper Chris Breen’s save from Shaun McManus early in the second half was crucial.

“Goals were crucial, both the goals we gave away and the goal chances we didn’t take. I thought that Chris Breen’s save was a big point in the game as we would really have had the momentum if that had gone in,” he said.

On the season as a whole, Carey believes it was a mixed bag for Aghadrumsee.

“I thought that we went well in the first part of the league and we were disappointed not to make the top five and into the top section in Division Two. “That set us back a bit and we never really recovered from that after it,” he added.

It was Aghadrumsee who started the brighter of the sides with Eddie Courtney lively in the early exchanges.

Courtney banged over the first point of the game although Enniskillen answered with the first of their three goals as Sean McAleer slotted home from close range after Conor Watson’s initial effort had been saved.

Conor McAleer then followed up with a point for the Gaels to make it 1-01 to 0-01 but Aghadrumsee hit back with the next three points to level things up by the ninth minute.

Eugene Kerins registered with a good effort before Courtney landed two points from play although he then kicked a close in free into the hands of Breen with Enniskillen moving the ball to the other end of the pitch for Brian McAleer to edge Enniskillen back in front.

Enniskillen began to get a grip on matters after this and Brian McAleer fired over his second point of the game before Richie O’Callaghan palmed the ball to the net after good work by Paddy Reihill to make it 2-03 to 0-04.

The sides swapped points over the remainder of the half with Courtney converting two frees for Aghadrumsee and Conor McAleer and O’Callaghan answering for Enniskillen.

Aghadrumsee began the second half on the front foot with Courtney stroking over a sideline ball before Shaun McManus broke though on goal but he was denied by Breen.

Aghadrumsee continued to press with Courtney lofting over a free while the same player then had a chance to grab a goal but his snap shot flew wide.

It took Enniskillen 13 minutes to register their first point of the second half from Conor McAleer although a well struck Courtney effort left three between the sides as the contest entered the final quarter, 2-05 to 0-08.

The Gaels though began to reassert themselves with Conor McAleer converting a free before he then put the game beyond Aghadrumsee with a thumping shot to the net to make it 3-07 to 0-09 with nine minutes to go.

The sides went through the motions in the latter stages with Ryan Boyle and Noel Beggan notching points for Aghadrumsee before Conor McAleer rounded off the scoring with a point from a free to leave six between the sides at the finish.
