Enniskillen Gaels booked their place in the Minor Football Championship final with a six point victory over Derrygonnelly Harps at a wet Garrison on Tuesday night.

With the sides level at the break, the deciding spell of the game was the opening six minutes of the second half as Enniskillen hit a quick-fire 1-03 to push into a lead that they never looked likely to lose over the remainder of the contest.

Indeed, the Gaels stretched their advantage to nine points as they controlled matters after the break with the Harps grabbing a late consolation goal through Shane McGullion in added on time.

The first half though was completely different story and Derrygonnelly will have been disappointed to have not gone in at the interval with some sort of lead after they had the better of the exchanges in the first 30 minutes.

The Harps were the quicker of the sides to settle and showed greater hunger and urgency over the course of the first half.

Derrygonnelly were particularly lively in the early stages as Connor Cassidy landed the first score of the game before Aidan McKenna rattled over a good score to double their advantage.

The influential Lee Jones then drove over a fine score after a surging run as Derrygonnelly opened up a three point cushion.

Enniskillen were slow to get going in the encounter and it took them 13 minutes to open their account but two converted frees from the impressive Conall Quinn had them back to within a point.

The Harps had further chances to add to the lead but they kicked three wides from scoreable positions before Colm Jones did find the range to make it 0-04 to 0-02 with 21 minutes on the clock.

Enniskillen though were beginning to see more of the ball in the latter period of the half and successful frees from Quinn and Neil McDermott had the sides level at 0-04 apiece at the break.

Whatever was said to the Gaels players at half time had the desired effect as they were like a different side in the second half.

Quinn put Enniskillen ahead with a free and another from Neil McDermott put two in it.

And with the second half only four minutes old the Gaels moved five clear as Nathan Stewart pounced for the first goal of the game. The direct ball into full forward Stewart reaped its reward for Enniskillen in the second half and from one such pass from Brendan Lilley the ball broke for Stewart and he lashed it soccer style low to the corner of the net.

When Timmy Boyd then fired over following a fine move it put the Gaels into a 1-07 to 0-04 lead with the half only six minutes old.

Cassidy notched his second point for Derrygonnelly but Enniskillen answered this with terrific points from Michael Dooris and Quinn while Stewart drove two further efforts at goal narrowly wide of the post.

Derrygonnelly struggled to make an impact in attack throughout the second half and although Jack Love pulled a point back, scores from Quinn from a free and Conor Goodwin from play put eight between the sides with nine minutes to go.

In fairness to Derrygonnelly they never threw in the towel and Gaels goalkeeper Jason Howe was called on to make a good stop from McKenna.

At the other end, McDermott landed a point for the Gaels and although McGullion punched to the net late on for Derrygonnelly, it was Enniskillen who deservedly took their place in the final.
