Irvinestown player manager Shane Goan has his team in a good place going into the championship; “Things have been going well to be fair. We have won the last seven games after losing our first two so we are happy with how we have come back. We are getting good numbers at training and boys are committing so that is important,” he said, with the former Ulster player adding, “They have got the better of us in the championship in recent years and it is not that we are looking for revenge or anything but we feel like we are in a good place at the minute and if we play to our potential we have a good chance of winning.” Newtownbutler meanwhile have the tonic of beating division two leaders Teemore in their last game but their form has been of the decidedly hot and cold variety of late.

Their manager Declan McKiernan explained that the squad are looking forward to the challenge ; “Irvinestown are a good young team. Very fit and very fast and we will have to be at our best but we would be confident that if we are then we will have a very good chance of winning the game.” The Monaghan native believes that the Intermediate Championship will be a cracking competition this season; “It is ultra competitive with a couple of teams from division one in it and I think it is going to be a very difficult competition to win.” Newtown are a seasoned team at this stage and many familiar names form the nucleus of the their side.

Ryan Carson, Brendan McBrien and James Connolly a trio of attackers all capable of game winning performances while further back John Maguire at midfield and Jarlath Jackman at corner back have caught the eye.

Irvinestown have had a powerful performer in the shape of Liam Murphy at midfield this season with the Duffy brothers Kevin and James two able footballers with the latter sure to have benefited from a season with the county set up. Stephen Sheridan at centre half forward has been a steadying influence as well for Irvinestown who will be hoping to bring their recent scintillating league form into the championship.
