Having cantered to victory at The Wells Fargo Championship at North Carolina on Sunday evening, Rory McIlroy was once again the toast of The European Tour at the glamorous European Tour Players’ Awards at the Sofitel Heathrow, where he picked up Golfer of the Year Award as well as the Players’ Player of the Year Award on the eve of the flagship BMW PGA Championship.

The Hollywood man claimed Majors number three and four last year at The Open Championship and the US PGA Championship respectively, while he also arrives at Wentworth Club this week as the defending champion, having added that prestigious trophy to his collection 12 months ago.

The 26 year old, who has already won on both sides of the Atlantic this year, was duly recognised for his outstanding achievements last year at a glitzy affair in London, which showcased the drama on the world stage The European Tour provides, through the many stunning highlights of The 2014 Race to Dubai season.

On top of the world Leona Maguire has sensationally climbed to the top of world ladies amateur rankings.

The Cavan native was elevated to the top spot after she triumphed in winning the NCAA South Back Regional Championship at the weekend.

Leona, who along with her sister Lisa, is on a golf scholarship at Duke University in North Carolina. It was Leona’s second consecutive circuit victory and her third overall title this season.

Blessed with great talent and dedication it’s great to see their potential now blossoming on the world stage.

PGA Flagship event at Wentworth Rory McIlroy will launch his defence of the BMW PGA Championship alongside Ryder Cup team-mates Martin Kaymer and Jamie Donaldson when play begins at Wentworth Club today.

The World Number One, who last week won his 18th worldwide professional title at the Wells Fargo Championship on the US PGA Tour, returns to Surrey, England, to defend the crown he claimed so memorably 12 months ago and will contest the first two days play in the familiar company of US Open Champion Kaymer and Welshman Donaldson.

Many of the top players will compete for the European Tour’s blue riband event.

With McIlroy in hot form it may be a case of looking for a bit of value without the world number one - Lee Westwood at 22/1 seems an ideal option.
