Ireland’s Paul Dunne and England’s Ashley Chesters will spearhead Great Britain and Ireland’s team in the Walker Cup against the United States at Royal Lytham and St. Annes next month.

Dunne, 22, was joint leader of the Open after 54 holes before finishing tied 30th at St. Andrews in July, while Chesters, 26, ended 12th.

Ireland has a record five players in the 10-man team for the biennial amateur tournament featuring foursomes and singles matches.

There was general consensus that the five Irishmen - Cormac Sharvin, Paul Dunne, Gavin Moynihan, Gary Hurley and Jack Hume all fully deserved their selection.

A snapshot of how the Irish players have performed this season reads as follows: In the recent European Amateur Championship, Hurley finished runner-up and Moynihan, the only survivor from the 2013 team, finished third. Moynihan also won the Irish Amateur Open for a second time in three years earlier this season.

Dunne led into the final round of the British Open at St. Andrews and reached the quarter-final of the US Amateur last week. Sharvin won the Brabazon Trophy (English amateur stroke play) and finally Hume was part of the Ireland team that retained the Home Internationals. All five are expected to join the professional ranks after the Walker Cup.

GB & Ireland will be looking for only their ninth win in the 45th edition of the event after losing the trophy in 2013.

“We have selected a talented group of players who compete at the highest levels of amateur golf and, in some cases, have played in major championships and Tour events,” said GB & Ireland captain Nigel Edwards.

“The Walker Cup offers these players a tremendous opportunity to display their abilities and gain invaluable experience of playing in international team competition.” The Walker Cup takes places at Royal Lytham & St Annes on 12-13 September.

PGA Tour FedExCup Play-offs This week’s Barclays Tournament kick starts this years FedExCup Play-offs.

Over the next five weeks, four events will manufacture great drama and render much of what’s gone before irrelevant. Jordan Spieth, with his two majors, second place at the PGA and fourth at St Andrews, leads the Money List by over four million dollars - yet if he doesn’t add a fifth title of the campaign between now and the end of the it, he’s unlikely to double his salary courtesy of a $10m FedEx Cup bonus.

This year’s opening tournament will be hosted by Plainfield Country Club, who previously hosted the event in 2011 when Dustin Johnson triumphed.
