Castle Hume Men; The Manor House Lakeland Hotel Open at Castle Hume on July 1 provided the platform for one of the most dazzling displays of golf seen at the course. Daniel Daly playing off six fired a fantastic 47 points to easily pick up first prize. Daniels round included one two, eight threes, seven fours, one five and one six which when put together gave him a score of five under par gross or a 65.
This is by far the best performance by an amateur golfer at the course in a qualifying competition and Daniel"s example on and off the course to all fellow golfers speaks volumes not only for his sporting talent but also for his temperament.
Darren Breen finished second with 43 points which would surely have won any other week just beating the prolific winner Graham Veitch into third also on 43 points by virtue of a better back nine. Blacklion Golf Club also got in on the act on Danny"s big day with Peter Wilson winning the visitors" prize with 37 points and Seamus Cullen picking up the gross with 34 points.
Most golfers would have taken some time to reflect on their glory but not Daniel who decided to let the fireworks off early for Independence Day on Friday, July 4 in the Lakeside Golfing Society"s Lakeland Engines Spares Cup. Daniel improved his record by two shots carding an incredible gross 63!
The future is obviously very bright for the very popular ambassador of the youth wing of the club and we all wish Daniel great success with his golfing career.
The Killyhevlin Hotel Singles Stableford on Saturday, July 4 was claimed by Conrad Wheeler fresh from his brief encounter with the professional ranks, carding an excellent 43 points. Richard Boles finished second with 43 points and Joe Woods third with 40 points. John Colton joined the Independence Day celebrations picking up the gross with 32 points.
The club stableford on Sunday, July 5 was won by Neil Corrigan with 39 points. Brian Leonard was second with 38 points and Ken Crowe third with 37 points. Martin Beatty picked up the gross with 23 points.
The Phair Cup Team captained by Douglas Hutton eased past Omagh Golf Club into the next round, the success once again based on a fine performance at home. The Lawson Cup team captained by Maurice Hetherington take an 11:5 lead into the away leg against Enniskillen Golf Club in what promises to be a close encounter of the right kind. Maurice no doubt has a few tactical changes up his sleeve for the away leg and will likely apply his normally successful 'horses for courses' approach to team selection. The Friday evening 14 Hole Mixed Scramble had a big turnout with the team of Dec O"Connell, Ruth Crooke and Maura Newman running out clear winners. It is rumoured around the Pro Shop that Maura"s new clubs worked a treat! This Saturday"s competition is The Farry Chartered Accountant"s Stableford.
