Rory McIlroy celebrates.
Rory McIlroy shows his delight at winning the Lough Erne Challenge.
Rory McIlroy won the inaugural Lough Erne Golf Challenge at Lough Erne Golf Resort after shooting a bogey free 68 to defeat Padraig Harrington by two shots.
Harrington, in an up and down round, shot a 70, finishing strongly with birdies at 16 and 17 thereby ensuring that young McIlroy could afford no slip-ups at the final hole.
McIlroy parred the 18th hole and when Harrington's birde putt slipped by, the 20 year old touring professional from Lough Erne was crowned the Lough Erne Golf Challenge winner for 2009, pocketing a nice cheque for $200,000 with Harrington winning $100,000.
At the prize presentation, Rory was presented with the specially commisoned Belleek Pottery Lough Erne Challenge trophy by Arlene Foster, Tourism minister, Jim Treacy, owner Lough Erne Golf Resort and John Maguire, managing director Belleek Pottery in the presence of MC for the day, Coleraine actor James Nesbitt.
