Lakeland Open; The winner of the best nett prize on Saturday at Enniskillen Golf Club was the popular face on the local podiums, Doreen Cathcart, with a score of 35 points. Debbie McMaster of Edenmore Golf Club picked up the gross prize. In Castle Hume the best score of the day came from Jenny Thompson (17). She had a slow start, due to a couple of double bogies, but then she slipped into a steady pace, gathering two points on every hole over the rest of the front nine. However, over the next nine, she really put the foot down and with four pars and a birdie on the 15th, she amassed a very credible 21 points. Her total of 36 points ensured her first place on Sunday. The gross prize on Sunday was awarded to Maura Newman, who wants her score to remain firmly under wraps!! The overall gross prize went to Castle Hume's Julie Blair (10).
For Doreen Frazer (15), at Castle Hume, it was her front nine which pleased her, scoring 20 points by virtue of three pars and six bogies. She then felt well set up to attack the latter half. Unfortunately her ball was sent to a watery grave on the 15th and this, together with a couple of earlier double bogies, saw her just pipped into 2nd place on Sunday with 35 points. It was good enough, all the same, to get her into fourth place in the overall winner's enclosure. She was delighted, as she felt her poor scoring the previous day in Enniskillen GC had left her little chance of picking up a prize.
Dympna Slowey (24) thought that she had given away any chance of a prize when she came into the clubhouse in Castle Hume with just 28 points, especially after she had messed up the last two holes and scored nil points! However, her good scoring on her own course ensured her of overall third place with a total of 65 points.
In second place overall, 10 handicapper Carmel Cavana, from Belvoir Park also thought she had blown it in Castle Hume. She started off steadily with two pars and two bogies but then "dinged" the par 5, fifth hole. Initially she didn't manage to make any progress over the back nine holes, but finishing with a birdie on the 14th and two pars on the last two holes helped her to a score of 31 points. This was just one shot behind the overall winner, on both days!
Our congratulations go to Eileen Cochrane (13) who collected the overall first prize. On Sunday, in Castle Hume, she started off her round a little eratically, alternating three points with single points, but still managed to keep to nett par until she reached the sixth hole. Here, a "ding", followed by a series of double bogies meant that she only scored 14 points over the front nine holes. However, she steadied the helm over the back nine and five pars brought her score to 32 points. This brought her total on the two courses to 68.
Everybody attending the prize giving at Enniskillen Golf Club on Sunday night was genuinely delighted for Eileen. She is a very popular face on the local fairways and thoroughly deserves this accolade. Congratulations to Eileen and the rest of the prize winners.
