Vagliano Trophy; Leona and Lisa Maguire emerged as the top points scorers for the Great Britain and Ireland team, despite losing 13-11 to their European counterparts in the Vagliano Trophy.
The Ryder Cup style tournament attracts the best amateur golfers from throughout Europe, and the 14 year old members of Slieve Russell and Castle Hume entered the record books as the youngest ever players to be selected for the GB & I team, giving away up to eight years on some of their teammates. Despite their relative inexperience however, the pair both had identical records over the two day competition, winning two and a half points from a possible four.
While today's finest golfing talent was in Fermanagh, the finest golfing talent of tomorrow had travelled to Northern Germany for the prestigious event. Having already demonstrated their foursome's ability by remaining undefeated as a pairing the European Team Championships earlier in the month, the twins added to their reputation by taking their side's only victory on the opening morning of action. They defeated their French and Belgian opponents despite a disappointing start that saw them three behind at the turn. Birdies at the 11th, 14th and 15th drew them level, and a thrilling final hole birdie helped them seal an unlikely victory.
The afternoon saw the twins split up to play their singles matches, and they once again secured points for their team. Leona survived a tough encounter against France's Lucie Andre to win on the final hole, but Lisa had to be content with half a point against Caroline Masson of Germany.
Trailing by three points going into day two, the GB & I team lost further ground in the morning foursomes, with the Maguire twins suffering their sole defeat of the weekend to a French pairing. They had more success in the afternoon singles however, Lisa winning her match 2up, while Leona halved her final match of the competition.
