August Monthly Medal
Chris Noble threw down the gauntlet to the category one golfers in Enniskillen and reaffirmed his spot as Fermanagh's lowest (male) handicapper when he stormed to a superb win in the August monthly medal. On a day when Gault, Craig and company fell short of the mark, four handicapper Noble cruised round the Castlecoole course in one under par gross for a nett 66. Noble played some dodgy stuff round the top nine but proved his mettle on the inward nine were he notched up four birdies in the last six holes to come home in a miserly 31 shots. His nearest contender was John Elliott who had a nett 68. The intermediate section was won by Liam Williamson, also with a nett 68. Similar to Noble, Williamson kept his best golf for the back nine which he covered in 39 shots. Davy Walker was runner-up to Williamson with a nett 68. Damian Ralph took the honours in the high section with a mediocre nett 71, pushing Pete Lutton into second spot with his nett 72.
"Eggs" & "Legs"
Brendan Drugan came out on top to win the Gabriel Hassard Trophy on July 22. In testing conditions, the "Droog" scored a respectable 17 points. He was one ahead of Dave Randall and Tom Palmer. Billy Crooke's 15 points was good enough to secure fourth spot.
The following week in somewhat easier conditions Christie Shannon proved his pedigree by winning the Lady President's prize to the "Eggs" with 21 points. He narrowly defeated Tom Palmer on a count back. The low section was won by Patsy McCaffrey whose 18 points just nudged Pat Concannon into the runner up spot also on a count back. The high section went to Tom Palmer with Tommy Armstrong claiming second on 20 points.
Moira Parfitt scored 20 points to win the "Legs" outing on July 23. She beat Dympna Slowey by a point with Ina Robinson in third spot with 18 points.
A week later, Rosemary Wylie saved her best for the major competitions when she notched up 19 points to win the Lady Presidents prize to the "Legs". It was a case of déjÀ vu for Dympna Slowey who finished runner up for the second week in a row. Gladys Fisher was third with 17 points.
Phair Cup & Lawson Cup
In a closely contested semi final, Gareth McMorris's Phair Cup team went down to Fintona. After the home leg Enniskillen required six points at Fintona to progress to the final. Many matches went to the wire at Fintona but ultimately the river in front of the 18th green proved costly for the Enniskillen golfers when some of them had a watery demise. John O'Neill's Lawson Cup team faired much better when they defeated neighbouring club Castle Hume to reach the final for the second year in succession. After the away leg at Castle Hume the match was finely balanced with the score at 11 to 5 in Castle Hume's favour. Enniskillen anchor men Dermot Gates and Liam Williamson recorded an excellent away win and secured four of the five points. But some astute player selections and omissions on the return leg at Enniskillen ensured O'Neill's men went one step better than the Phair Cup players and now have an opportunity for back to back Lawson Cup wins.
