Castle Hume

Over 120 golfers took to the fairways at Castle Hume on Saturday in search of the President's Prize. Club President Gerald Love's big day benefitted from some fine sunshine but it was the wind, the tight pin positions and the Usain Bolt type greens that separated the winners from the also-rans.

With the greens ironed early in the morning only the golfers with silky short game skills were liable to find success and the man who handled the conditions best of all on the day was Anthony Cassidy who kept his nerve and his touch to win with a superb 41 points. Peter Beckett playing off 12 finished second with an excellent score of 40 points.

John Colton (6) claimed third prize with 39 points just edging David McQuade (18) into fourth virtue of a better back nine. Daniel Daly picked up the gross prize with 32 points. Raymond Gallagher won the front nine and Anthony "Splasher" Leonard picked up the back nine. Paddy Clarke won the guest's first prize with a fine 38 points and Frank McGloin finished second in the guest's section with 33 points.

George Crooke enjoyed winning the Past President's prize again! Marian McGinnity won the Ladies Prize with a fine 37 points just pipping Julie Blair who finished second on 36 points. Steven Breen picked up the Juvenile Prize with 32 points.

In his victory speech Anthony affirmed the he was delighted to pick up the President's Prize not least since they have been close neighbours in Derrygonnelly for many years. Anthony went on to congratulate President Gerald on the success of his day and thanked him for the fantastic array of prizes. President Gerald thanked all those who had helped to make his year and day a success. He reserved special thanks for Castle Hume Leisure, the Match and Handicap Secretary, the Pro Shop, the bar and restaurant staff and of course his family.

On special days like President's Day the five par threes tend to have a big say in the prizes. They can make or break a card! Anthony Cassidy had four excellent par threes on his card but shot of the day had to be Pat Duffy's hole in one at the second hole. Opinion was split between those who described it as a fantastic shot and those who said it was lucky but everyone was grateful for Packie's generosity in the bar!

Just as if to prove it was not a fluke Packie almost repeated the feat on the 17th hole. The bar bill could have been doubled! While many people rested up on Sunday after an excellent President's Day, evening and night Ryan Corrigan seized the opportunity to win the Club Stableford with a fine 41 points.

Anthony Leonard followed on from his back nine on Saturday to take second place with 37 points and Darren Breen finished third also with 37 points. Members are reminded that the club is hosting its annual fundraising Four Person Team Competition and BBQ this Friday, August 21. Tee off from 9am-5pm with BBQ starting at 7pm. The BBQ will be followed by prize-giving and disco with 60s-80s specialist DJ Big Tommy. Golf, BBQ and disco is £20 pp. If you cannot make the golf the BBQ is £15. The timesheet will fill up quickly so please ring the Pro Shop to book your time. The club would like to pass on its condolences to the family of vice-captain Dermot Burns and ex-captain Patsy Burns on the recent death of their mother Susan.
