Disappointment is a golfing emotion that Leona and Lisa Maguire are not used to, but the young twins had to settle for second best last week as their European side lost out to American in the Junior Solheim Cup.

The pair travelled to Illinois to play in the prestigious event which took place as a precursor to the main ladies event, but although Lisa emerged with two points from her three matches and Leona half a point, their international side lost out by 15.5 points to 8.5.

The European team's preparation for the event was curtailed by heavy rain and thunder on the first practice day, but it seemed to make little difference to Lisa Maguire, who along with Kelly Tidy took victory in the fourballs. Despite playing against US Amateur finalist Jennifer Johnston, the European pair sealed a 3&1 victory. Leona did not make a successful start however. Paired with Scotland's Sally Watson, the pair created enough chances to win, but failed to take their opportunities and were made to pay, eventually losing 2&1.

The same pairings were selected for the afternoon foursomes, and Leona led the team out in the first match. It looked as though she would be rewarded with her first point, but despite taking a one hole advantage onto the 18th, a wayward drive meant they had to settle for half a point. Lisa was playing the fourth match, and once again she secured a full point for the team, closing out the match on the 16th green.

Europe faced an uphill task going into the singles trailing by three points. Leona was out in the fourth match against Ani Gulugian, who was ranked seven in the world. Despite posting three birdies, Leona could not match the golf of her illustrious opponent, and was eventually beaten on the 14th green. Lisa went out in the final match against the undefeated Kristen Parke, but she failed to produce her scintillating golf of the previous day, eventually losing on the penultimate green.
