Young, up and coming Castle Hume golfer, Daniel Daly finished fifth in the Faldo Series Ireland Championship which was played at Lough Erne Golf Resort on Monday and Tuesday of this week.

The event attracted many of the top emerging young talents in golf throughout the country as they all battled in different age groups to try and make it to the finals of the renowned Faldo Series which this year will be held in Brazil.

Rory McIlroy is a former graduate of the Faldo Series which helps spot and develop top class young golfers.

For 18-year-old, Daniel, who plays off four, this was his first foray into big time competition and his fine fifth place in the U21 section, for which he could play in the next two years, has only whetted his appetite for more. Daniel shot a 79 and an 81 for a 160 total as the Faldo designed course proved more than a match for the best young talent in Ireland. The winning score was a superb 146.

Daniel though was delighted with his overall showing in his first national competition.

"I really enjoyed it. I played well today (Tuesday) but just did not putt that well," he enthused. "The set-up of the course was really tough and it certainly was a great examination for all the players. It was my first effort at this sort of level and I would definitely like to have another go if the Faldo Series comes back to Lough Erne."

Daniel also revealed that he would like to pursue his golfing career further and is working hard to get his handicap down even further from its exact figure of 3.5.

"I hope to go to University and if I could combine that with a golf scholarship in the United States, for instance, then that would be brilliant. However, I have a lot of work to do as the lower you are, the better places you can possibly get."

The Faldo Series is all about bringing the best talent together and inspiring them to even greater things. Castle Hume's Daniel Daly may not have qualified for the finals in Brazil but his ambitions remain and who knows what the future may hold.

The competition also saw the first hole in one in competition take place at the Lough Erne Golf Resort when another four handicapper Ben Banerji hit an ace at the 218 yard par three 13th. The youngster hit a superb three wood into the wind at the challenging uphill par three into into the hole for a shot he will never forget, recording a feat that messers McIlory and Harrington could not match in their big duel.
