President's Day at Clogher Valley

President's Day was held at Clogher Valley Golf Club last weekend and despite the severe weather conditions on Friday, 85 players turned out to support the President Liam Byrne. Davy Black scored an impressive 39 points in terrible conditions on Friday afternoon to hold the overnight lead.

Saturday morning was drier but the strong winds and severe pin positions made scoring difficult, however, the top three places went to players out on Saturday.

Overall winner was club Captain John Martin, who shot a great 42 points, second was Chris Bloomfield with 40 points, beating Seamus McGirr, also 40 points, into third place on countback.

The gross went to Adam Williamson, Gary Millar took the front nine and Davy Black claimed the back nine. Longest Drive on the 18th went to John McDonnell, his mighty wind assisted drive travelled nearly 280 yards. Visiting President of Aughnacloy Golf Club Hugh Williamson won the visitor's prize and the closest the pin at the eighth. The seniors' nine hole competition was won by Dessie McCormack. In the ladies' section. Sharon Campbell took first place with another great round, scoring 36 points, Linda Armstrong was second and Jenny Williamson won the closest the pin.

After an excellent meal in the clubhouse, William Crawford announced the President and with a standing ovation Liam took his place at the presentation table. Liam welcomed his guests and thanked all who played in the competition. He thanked the chef and staff for the lovely meal. Liam congratulated all the winners and thanked everyone who had helped organise the day. He congratulated the green keepers Tommy Clarke and Raymond Farrell on the excellent condition of the course, especially considering the recent wet weather.

Liam presented his wife Mary with a bouquet of flowers and she assisted him in presenting the prizes. Hugh Williamson spoke on behalf of the visitors thanking Liam for their invitations, he also commented on the condition of the course and the excellent facilities at the club. On accepting his winners prize John Martin congratulated Liam on a wonderful display of prizes and on how well the day had went. John also thanked Liam for all he has done for the club in his year as president. The evening continued with a dance to music from the Super Sers.

Next weekend there is an open stableford competition in aid of the NSPCC, time-sheets are in operation, anyone with an official GUI handicap is welcome to play and support a very worthwhile charity, ring 028 89521739 to book.
