Make sure your golfing equipment is in working order
During the winter months when the weather and shorter daylight hours play havoc with your time on the golf course, don't just leave your clubs in the garage gathering dust.
The winter gives you the ideal opportunity to give your golfing equipment and thorough MOT and ensure everything is in fine fettle.
Things to look out for:
Grips: The grip is one of the most important components in golf and the only part of the club that you actually touch. They are made of materials that age and wear as a function of time and use. Ozone, heat, dirt and oils from your hands all age your grips and cause the natural degradation. The traction that a fresh grip provides lets you hold the club lightly without the subconscious fear of losing the club during your swing. This relaxed state promotes proper swing mechanics and wrist action, while a worn grip causes you to grasp the club tighter, resulting in arm and wrist tension that inhibits proper swing mechanics and leads to a loss of power and control. A fresh set of grips is an inexpensive and fast way to bring a noticeable change to your game.
Clean grooves: Clean clubs are essential to play better golf and shoot lower scores, which is why when watching the Pros on Tour you'll see the caddie wipe the club clean as soon as the player gives it back to him. Clean clubfaces and grooves are as important as having a clean ball to putt as dirt on the face and in the groves will have a detrimental affect on the spin and fight of the ball.
Glove: How is your golf glove looking? Is it getting worn and looks like it has seen better days? The golf glove, much like the grip, is vitally important as it helps to provide extra grip without you having to hold tightly to the club.
The older a glove gets the less grip it will give you. So if there are holes appearing on your glove or the leather is starting to get a little hard then it is time to throw it in the bin and get a fresh one.
Shoes: Are your shoes still nice and fresh or are they beginning to look ragged and worn? An uncomfortable pair of shoes can make 18 holes unbearable - there can be no worse feeling than coming down the final stretch with the prospect of a good score, only to have blisters set in and leave you limping the last few holes and unable to concentrate on your golf.
Spikes: A solid and secure base is vital during the golf swing. If you lose your footing and start slipping and sliding on the turf then you'll be sending the golf ball in all directions.
So check your spikes to ensure they are in good condition and will continue to offer you grip and traction with the turf.
