Despite the significant advantages in technology many club golfers still struggle to find the fairway with any consistency to lower their scores.

Hitting fairways from the tee is essential and will help save shots, lower scores and make the game more enjoyable.

Introducing the following steps will give you more chance of achieving this.

Ensure your Driver is right for you Being custom fitted will identify not only what shaft type and flex you should be using but also the correct loft combination and face angle to give the optimum launch conditions for your swing type.

Aim & Relax Get specific about where you want the ball to finish and aim on this line. Ensure there is no tension in the arms, hands or shoulders as you take your position over the ball.

Watch your ball position It is very common for amateurs to play the ball too far forward in their stance in an attempt to hit up on the ball.

This leads to open shoulders and a club face pointing left off target. Position the ball more inside the left heel to avoid these tendencies.

Don’t over stretch Your set-up position should see the arms hanging naturally from the shoulders, not stretched out for a ball too far away.

It is also important the grip of your club points at your navel.

Commit to your target Any attempt to steer, guide, prod or poke the ball down the fairway will result in the complete opposite of the desired outcome.

Make a free swing through, rather than at the ball and straighter shots will follow.

Follow the flight Contrary to what many are told ‘keep your head down’ is actually bad advice.

Allow your eyes to follow the flight of the ball towards the target which will help the free turn through the ball.

Hold the finish Not for too long, but being able to hold your finish once you have completed the swing is a sure sign you have swung within yourself Get ready for 2014 - Free Fitting at Enniskillen Golf Club Why not avail of our PGA fitting team at Enniskillen Golf Club, we will fit, advise and teach you how to improve your game for the year ahead.
