Even the best players in the world who generally make this most frustrating of games appear so easy, hit shots that end up far from where they intended and in deep rough.

When this is at the edge of a green it can result in one of the most difficult shots especially if the ball is sitting down and there is not a lot of green to work with.

A great way to approach a shot like this is to use a similar method that you would in a green side bunker shot.

Start by selecting the same club you would normally, either a sand wedge or lob wedge.

Open the club face, widen your stance, position the ball forward and flex your knees more, just as you would in a bunker.

This position will help establish a swing which, like a bunker shot, has a lower centre of gravity, is dominated more by the wrists and where the lower body remains very stable.

With practice you will find it is easier to slide the club face through the higher grass and under the ball, resulting in more predictable contact and far more control.

If the grass is very thick and wiry, then it is also a good idea to hold on a bit tighter to ensure the club face does not close over at impact.

Rory fails to close out Honda Classic While it made for great television viewing, the four man play-off at last week’s Honda Classic at the Jack Nicklaus-designed PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, will surely play on Rory Mc Ilroy’s mind until he can secure his first win of the season.

McIlroy began the day 12 under par, two clear of his playing partner and eventual winner Russell Henley, but both his birdies on the front nine were immediately cancelled out by bogeys. He dropped another shot at the ninth to leave himself 11 under and it closed up further on the back nine.

McIlroy dropped another at the 12th and followed a double-bogey at 16 - where he hit out of a bunker into the water - with another bogey to fall out of the lead altogether. At the 18th, though, McIlroy produced a moment of magic to set up the chance of a fairytale winning eagle.

The 24-year-old’s second shot carried the water and bunker in front of the green and stopped almost dead, 20 feet from the pin.

McIlroy’s eagle putt trickled just by on the right and after he tapped in, Henley also holed out to make the play-off and he kept his nerve to make birdie while his rivals fell away.

Despite this collapse on the back nine, it shouldn’t take Mc Ilroy too long to banish those memories, he is still a class act and expect him to come back fist pumping again in the next few weeks, maybe even the Masters.
