With Tiger Woods still recovering from back surgery one would have thought that some of the world’s leading players would have seized the opportunity to establish themselves as the world’s number one. However the form shown by many of the world’s leading players falls way short of their normal high standards, never before have there been so many maiden winners on the PGA Tour.

This week Adam Scott has replaced Tiger Woods at number one in the world golf rankings despite sitting out last week’s Byron Nelson Championship.

The Australian was certain to claim top spot regardless of the result in Texas, with Woods still absent following surgery.

Matt Kuchar could also have moved ahead of Woods but tied for seventh and had to settle for climbing to fourth spot in the rankings.

Latest leading positions in official world rankings: 1 Adam Scott 7.9936pts, 2 Tiger Woods 7.8495, 3 Henrik Stenson 7.7203, 4 Matt Kuchar 7.1229, 5 Bubba Watson 7.0429, 6 Jason Day 6.6067, 7 Sergio Garcia 6.2649, 8 Justin Rose 6.1097, 9 Jordan Spieth 6.0949, 10 Rory McIlroy 5.7644 Golfer aged 11 qualifies for US Open An 11-year-old has qualified for the US Women’s Open to be played at Pinehurst next month.

Californian Lucy Li carded scores of 74 and 68, defeating the field by seven strokes, at a qualifier in Half Moon Bay.

Lexi Thompson used to be the joint youngest US Open participant, with Morgan Pressel, at the age of 12.

Li’s achievement comes after Guan Tianlang played in the 2013 masters at the age of 14 which was criticised by several players.

Preview: BMW PGA Championship The European Tour comes home this week for its flagship event at Wentworth - the BMW PGA Championship.

Huge crowds are expected thanks to the strong field assembled and the tournament kicks off today.

The course is always tough to navigate and it has undergone numerous changes in recent years, to a mixed reception from players, with Ernie Els having a large hand in the modifications.

Henrik Stenson, Martin Kaymer, Sergio Garica, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter headline the event but the list goes on with most of Europe’s top players making the trip.

Stenson will hope to get his first win in 2014 as the player we saw in 2013 seems a distance memory now.

Garcia comes off a disappointing week at the Open de Espana but the Spaniard was in good form previously and will undoubtedly challenge.

Rose and McIlroy also come into the tournament on a hot streak, as does Westwood, and they will be cheered on by vociferous home support.
